Description Big thanks to everyone who came out in June to hear Ben Satterfield talk about the emerging future in the iPhone space. If you missed it, you can read about about Ben in this Wired article. Looks like Ben is now a card carrying member of the MOTM crew too; we’re excited about that.
For July, it’s our honor and privilege to have Aaron Ross present. A Stanford alum, Aaron wrote the book on sales 2.0. While Senior Director of Corporate Development & Acquisitions at Salesforce.com, he grew the B2B sales division to $100M. He’ll give us insight on how he did it. Aaron has an ability to make sales simple and fun. Aaron has a new business that he’s launching called CEO Flow that he’ll be sharing with us as well.
Also, big thanks to Ben Kuo from socalTECH.com, introducing us to Aaron. If you aren’t subscribing to Ben’s daily e-mail you’re missing out.
MOTM will start at 7:30 at The Four Seasons in Westlake.

What happens
Apple has updated iTunes to 8.2.1 which includes a block preventing Palm Pre users from using iTunes music library on their Palm Pre.
Not sure I understand why Apple would do this other than to maintain control iTunes on their iPod, iTouch, etc.. It is like the walled garden mentality that gets companies in trouble. Why Apple is not open to having other devices access the iTunes library is perplexing.
The iTunes update 8.2.1 in particular blocks syncing of your iTunes library with a Palm Pre. Not sure what else is new.
Apples banning Palm Pre from iTunes…: In the war between the new Palm Pre and the iPhone/iPod Touch, Apple is .. https://tr.im/sBZI
Apple updated iTunes to Version 8.2.1 today, and in its usual cryptic style, said that the new version “provides a number of important bug fixes and addresses an issue with verification of Apple devices.”
Was this a smart move on Apple’s part, some would say yes. As it prevents unauthorized use by devices that are not officially supported to access the iTunes library. In addition if you don’t have an Apple device you shouldn’t be allowed to sync your iTunes library unless there’s an agreement in place….??
Some of the buzz /posts online:
it breaks tethering! Don’t update!!!!
This has nothing to do with the Pre… the blocking of the Pre was just a side effect of Apple stopping the iPhone 3GS from being Jailbroken. The encrypted verification scheme was in place for the 3GS, but the encryption keys were being dumped to the temp folder, which was necessary to jailbreak the 3GS. Now that they shored up that hole, it just happened to also block the Pre… get over yourselves… the only whiners are the Pre owners that were enjoying the good life off the back of the iTunes developers… Palm needs to make its own program and quit standing on the shoulders of geniuses!
iTunes is for iPods and iPhones. It’s that simple. If you bought a Pre knowing that Palm was allowing unlicensed syncs then your are a dumbass. If Palm started using Blackberry Manger would RIM stand by and let them? No, and neither should Apple. If you are the “I won’t use my iPod anymore!!! Waaah waah, never buying Apple product again” type of person the it’s you loss. Enjoy your future crappy mp3 player. The rest of the world won’t care that the small amount of pre owners are upset.

OriginOil Announces Breakthrough Dynamic Lighting Process
– Biofeedback Process Controller Optimizes Algae Growth and Daily Harvesting Rates –
Los Angeles, CA July 15, 2009 – OriginOil, Inc. (OOIL), the developer of a breakthrough technology to transform algae, the most promising source of renewable oil, into a true competitor to petroleum, today announced a breakthrough Dynamic Control System designed to respond continuously to the algae’s behavior. This invention improves energy efficiency and growth rates by ensuring the right types and amounts of light are used at all times as the algae grows to maturity.
“This is a true bio-feedback system,” said Scott Fraser, VP Operations and one of the inventors of the process. “The algae lets the controller know what it needs as it needs it, creating a self-adjusting growth system.”
At the heart of the system is a programmable controller that receives information from multiple sensor types reading the algae culture. The controller, which can be programmed for specific algae strains, responds by sending out commands to change lighting parameters such as intensity, pulsing frequency, and duty cycle. OriginOil’s existing automation of the nutrient delivery process will be integrated in the final version of the Dynamic Control System.
The new lighting automation takes advantage of a new generation of Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs), which OriginOil researchers have learned greatly improve productivity in dense cultures, and which also deliver the accurate frequency tuning and instant-on capability needed for a true feedback loop.
“We are currently using the new Dynamic Control System to test many lighting variations such as concentration, angles, distribution, and pulsing intervals,” said Dr. Vikram Pattarkine, OriginOil CTO. “We expect this study to yield a wealth of data about what works best in algae lighting.”

About OriginOil, Inc.
OriginOil, Inc. is developing a breakthrough technology that will transform algae, the most promising source of renewable oil, into a true competitor to petroleum. Much of the world’s oil and gas is made up of ancient algae deposits. Today, our technology will produce “new oil” from algae, through a cost-effective, high-speed manufacturing process. This endless supply of new oil can be used for many products such as diesel, gasoline, jet fuel, plastics and solvents without the global warming effects of petroleum. Other oil producing feedstock such as corn and sugarcane often destroy vital farmlands and rainforests, disrupt global food supplies and create new environmental problems. Our unique technology, based on algae, is targeted at fundamentally changing our source of oil without disrupting the environment or food supplies. Looking for a standalone OTA(over the air) HD (high definition) DVR(digital video recorder)
Don’t forget a good antenna:
Antennas Direct DB4 Multi Directional HDTV Antenna
Some resources for antennas and configuration:
There’s a few devices that we are finding on various sites.
Sony DHG-HDD500
LG LST-3410A
EchoStar TR-50
DTVPal DVR
Magnavox SD DVR DVDR
Click here for more info on the Magnavox 160GB DVD Recorder with Digital Tuner, under $250
The option I’m considering is the Philips DVR with a Digital Tuner, 160GB Drive and DVD Recorder for about $300. This is a fairly new product. I’m still researching it, but there are many good reviews. Here’s a link to the product.
https://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4922159
TiVo’s unit is a great dual tuner HD OTA DVR but it is going to cost you around $550
From Echostar:
The TR50 will be sold as the DTVPal DVR, and will be available around Thanksgiving for a price of $299. It will be available online through DISH Network. At this time we do not have any information on whether the product will be available through retail outlets. An online information site is planned for the near future. Please check back with us as we get closer to the product launch date. Thank you for contacting EchoStar. Regards, EchoStar Sales Team
Is there no market? What percentage of people who have HDTVs don’t have satellite or cable? Based on the number of channels I watch and what is available in digital I would consider using a OTA DVR and not have cable or a dish. Let’s say the device costs $500 and I am paying $75 for a dish that doesn’t take long to pay for itself. nobody wants to be tied down to monthly payments for a service. If I can pay a onetime fee for a device why not?
What we are trying to accomplish is use the Digital OTA signal to watch tv channels on a flat screen tv, in addition is to record programs with the dvr scheduling. All with one device with no monthly fees.
Product need includes:
2 ATSC tuners to enable you to watch one show and tape another
DVR recording capability (enables pause, replay etc)
Decent outputs compatable with todays equipment
HD, DVRs, Set-top boxes, OTA
