Pasadena Startup Weekend – February 15th – 17th

Friday, February 15th – Sunday, February 17th: Pasadena Startup Weekend, 5 pm.

Get ready for Pasadena Startup Weekend! Startup Weekends are weekend-long, hands-on experiences where entrepreneurs can find out if startup ideas are viable. On average, half of Startup Weekend’s attendees have technical or design backgrounds, the other half have business backgrounds. This event is open to everyone in the Pasadena community, not just to Caltech students. Registration is now open!

More info on Startup Weekends:  Beginning with open mic pitches on Friday, attendees bring their best ideas and inspire others to join their team. Over Saturday and Sunday teams focus on customer development, validating their ideas, practicing LEAN Startup Methodologies and building a minimal viable product. On Sunday evening teams demo their prototypes and receive valuable feedback from a panel of experts. Visit the website (https://pasadena.startupweekend.org/) for more details.

About Startup Weekend: Startup Weekends are 54-hour events designed to provide superior experiential education for technical and non-technical entrepreneurs.  Beginning with Friday night pitches and continuing through brainstorming, business plan development, and basic prototype creation, Startup Weekends culminate in Sunday night demos and presentations.  Participants create working startups during the event and are able to collaborate with like-minded individuals outside of their daily networks. All teams hear talks by industry leaders and receive valuable feedback from local entrepreneurials. The weekend is centered around action, innovation, and education.  Whether you are looking for feedback on a idea, a co-founder, specific skill sets, or a team to help you execute, Startup Weekends are the perfect environment in which to test your idea and take the first steps towards launching your own startup.

For more information on the Startup Weekend program, watch this short video:

Prizes include guaranteed access to the Art Center Accelerator, IdeaLab and the Silicon Beach Pitch Competition this summer, among others. In addition, 6 meals will be provided. At the end of the weekend, participants should have a working startup, have learned new things and know many new people (and be fed!).

Confirmed mentors and judges are:
Erik Hovanec
Karen Hoffman
Aaron Fyke
Ken Pickar

Westvleteren XII – Best Beer in the World

For any beer nerds with extra bucks to blow.

Rare and rather pricey $55/bottle Belgian beer, Westvleteren XII,
described by some as “the best beer in the world.”

The beer first debuted in the US just last month.
#1 Beer in the World – RateBeer
100 points out of 100 – Beer Advocate

Here’s a list of retail stores:

Trappist Westvleteren 12 (XII) – Brouwerij Westvleteren (Sint-Sixtusabdij van Westvleteren)

Total Wine locations around appear to have sold the beer.

Beginning Dec. 12, a limited number of stores are selling “bricks” of the beer — a gift box with six 11.2-ounce bottles and two glasses — for $84.99.

“Westy”

If you can’t find Westy try Rochefort Trappistes 10 or St. Bernardus 12

Dodging Death – is radical life extension too radical?

Dodging Death – is radical life extension too radical?

How old is too old? The 20th century added thirty years to life expectancy in the developed world, but are more candles on the birthday cake all we want? Some scientists think the body has a metabolic stop-sign at about age 122; others think that through new technologies, genetics, and robotics we can expand our longevity beyond 150 years. And one man thinks immortality is possible — that the first human who will reach 1000 years of age has already been born. But with great age, our assumptions of life, family, work, taxes, government, health, sex… our humanness…would change. Mat Kaplan, host of NEXT: People | Science | Tomorrow, the Crawford Family Forum series on science, asks: “Are you ready for the long life?”
