Micro-business Means Business

SHOP SMALL

Courtesy of Leanna Lin

Leanna’s Lins Wonderland in Eagle Rock is teaming up with neighboring businesses to offer deals and activities for “Small Business Saturday.”

Your local diner, the independent bookstore on the corner, the mechanic who fixes your brakes, your child’s math tutor – all are examples of micro-business at work. These small enterprises, most with one to five employees and many owned and operated by minorities, are all around us, part of our daily fabric. We depend on them from dawn to dusk. But the challenges and pitfalls of running a “micro-biz” are many:  some owners can’t quality for loans; others don’t have the right training to manage administrative tasks, HR issues, or the shifting “post-recession” marketplace; still others struggle with cash flow.

Passion and persistence can keep these businesses going, but training, connections to markets and customers, and capital are the tools that make for success. KPCC’s business reporter Ben Bergman gets inside “micro-biz” with Stacey Sanchez, senior community loan officer for CDC Small Business Finance and the California Association for Micro Enterprise Opportunity (CAMEO). Joining them is successful micro- to small- business owner Adela Beltran, who started selling clothes door-to-door and now owns and operates the Paramount Auto Center in Downey. We’ll also hear from other entrepreneurs, both successful and struggling, and representatives of support organizations.  Don’t miss this opportunity to get information and advice, and share ideas that will help push your own micro-biz to success!

Moderator:

Ben Bergman: business reporter for KPCC
@thebenbergman

Guests:

Adela Beltran: owner and operator of the Paramount Auto Center in Downey. Her journey began in La Barca, Jalisco, where at the age of eight, she ran her family’s market. When they moved to the U.S., she worked as a seamstress, then sold clothes door-to-door, started a travel agency and a clothing boutique, and now the car dealership.

Stacey Sanchez: Senior Community Loan Officer for CDC Small Business Finance and member of the board of directors for the California Association for Micro Enterprise Opportunity (CAMEO).

7:45am – Doors open/Breakfast
8:30am – Program

Admission is FREE, but RSVPs are required.

The Grilled Cheese Truck update and a special invitation from Dave Danhi

Hey Y’all Grilled Cheese Truck Fans,

I have some great news to share with all of you!  Our Company, The Grilled Cheese Truck, Inc.,  has commenced an additional round of private financing for up to $5 million (the “Financing”) under the new Jumpstart Our Business Startup (“JOBS”) Act regulations,  so we can continue to expand our operations as set forth in our business plan.  Because of my attention to our social media, it feels as if I “know” a lot of you, and wanted to personally reach out about this great opportunity.

As the Company enters into this round of private capital funding, I would like to invite you to participate in what I believe is a meaningful investment.  Interested followers of The Grilled Cheese Truck who meet certain investor thresholds can purchase an interest in The Grilled Cheese Truck with a minimum investment of $5,000 and up to the sum of $25,000.

To my knowledge, the Grilled Cheese Truck became the first publicly held, fully reporting, gourmet food truck in America in October 2012.

I am happy to invite qualifying investors to become shareholders in the Company at this exciting time in our development.  The Grilled Cheese Truck has been named the number one Food truck in Los Angeles several times, and the winner of the Best food truck in Southern California by the Los Angeles Times 2 years in a row!  We’re now considered by many as the number one gourmet food truck in America!   The demand for our tasty melts has been rather amazing, and the lines continue to grow.

Over the past year our Company has experienced significant growth!   We began the year with two Grilled Cheese Trucks, and we now have additional trucks rolling out successfully in Southern California, Phoenix, and Texas.   Our existing trucks are already a proven winner in the QSR (Quick Serve Restaurant) industry, financially out-performing other food trucks and many fast food franchise businesses.

Over the last 4 years, I have received numerous requests for investment opportunities in our Company and now can finally offer such opportunity. The food truck industry is experiencing significant growth and we believe we have a first mover advantage.   According to the National Restaurant Association, food truck revenues are expected to generate 2.7 billion dollars in 2017, up from approximately $650 million dollars in 2012!

The Grilled Cheese Truck is not only capitalizing on the increasingly popular food truck revolution, but also recognizing our country’s post-war veterans.    Once our franchising activities are established, we intend to market the first 100 franchises primarily to post-war veterans.

The Grilled Cheese Truck’s training and operation have already proven to be a perfect match for veteran’s unique skill sets.  In fact, General (ret) Wesley Clark, former NATO Supreme Allied Commander, joined The Grilled Cheese Truck as Vice Chairman and Director, and is actively involved in our Veteran Franchise Program, which includes providing up to 100 qualified Veterans the opportunity to participate in ownership of their own franchise Truck!   Veterans have unique skill sets that are well suited for owning and operating their own food truck franchise and these veterans deserve to have an opportunity to live the American dream and own their own business.

Right now we are in the preliminary stages of our business plan.   Like early Starbucks and MacDonalds, Wall Street is now seeing tremendous demand and growth in the QSR sector, and we believe The Grilled Cheese Truck is going to be one of the fastest growing young companies in America.   We are reaching out to people like you, our loyal followers that have been watching the Grilled Cheese Truck for months or even years, who can identify with our food and support my vision of providing veterans an opportunity to own their own franchise Grilled Cheese Truck!

I invite you to consider an investment in our Company and contribute to helping us give back to the deserving veterans of this country.  We have an aggressive, yet very realistic, growth plan and to see it through, we need to raise additional funds so we can achieve our vision and goals.  Please take a few minutes to watch the Grilled Cheese Truck Video and see the offering related materials at https://www.thegrilledcheesetruck.com/investment/

Please note that you must qualify as an “Accredited Investor” to participate.   Now’s the time to get in at the initial stages of something really special!

Should you have any questions, or want additional information, please reach out to our office at 949.479.2571.

Thanks again in advance for your interest and I hope you decide to become a part of The Grilled Cheese Truck shareholder base.

Yours truly,

Dave Danhi, Founder, Chef and Chief Creative Officer/The Grilled Cheese Truck, Inc.

(PASADENA, Calif./LOS ANGELES) – DATE – Just in time for the holidays, the Contemporary
Crafts Market comes to the Pasadena Convention Center November 1-3, 2013. Returning as
the West Coast’s premiere event for one-of-a-kind functional and decorative crafts, the
November market will feature the distinctive works of approximately 200 of the nation’s finest
artists — ranging from intricate jewelry, unique glassware and ceramics to hand-painted textiles,
custom furniture, mixed-media creations and much more. All items on display and for sale have
been jury-selected for their exceptional quality.
The Contemporary Crafts Market has been a showcase for burgeoning and established talent
since its inception 28 years ago. The market brings together an eclectic mix of artisans, while
also allowing visitors to meet the artists behind some of the nation’s finest crafts.
“Each year, the Contemporary Crafts Market provides shoppers and collectors with some of the
finest craft pieces from across the United States,” said Roy Helms, founder of the Contemporary
Crafts Market and past president of the American Craft Enterprises, the marketing arm of the
American Crafts Council. “This market will be no exception, with a truly extraordinary array of
pieces available to visitors that are perfect gifts for family and friends.”
The Contemporary Crafts Market is a carefully juried show featuring fine crafts and quality
functional and decorative arts. The exhibitors undergo a rigorous screening process to qualify
as participants in the show. All artwork must be quality hand-made designs and be represented
by the artist.
Helms has continually sought to raise awareness of fine crafts as a serious art form by
highlighting talented artists, including many whose works can be found in national and
international museums and galleries. For nearly three decades, the Contemporary Crafts Market
has done a great deal to bring greater recognition and appreciation to the crafts profession by
challenging America’s perception of handmade art.
“The level of quality and originality of crafts being produced by participating artists has
superseded itself year after year attracting new craft and folk art audiences,” added Helms.
Many noted interior designers, high-end collectors and retail buyers often visit the market to
gain insight into developing color and style trends. As the ideal resource for unique and original
holiday shopping, the Contemporary Crafts Market remains an invaluable testament to the
American Crafts Movement.
This November’s market will feature a number of artists who take novel approach to the art of
craft including:
Local Pasadena artist Joe Feinblatt is a wood turner producing fine quality bowls, wood
turnings with spun metal, and unique ‘green’ lamps, that are not only energy efficient, but are
produced from sustainably harvested or salvaged woods. www.greenwoodartist.com
Artist Joseph Gatto has been making jewelry for over 60 years. He
reuses or recycles precious metals, gold, silver and platinum
together with antiques, or antiquities up to 3000 years old. He is a
proud environmentalist and an advocate of objects made by hand
by local crafts persons. www.wearartnow.com
Artist Yumi Ueno’s designs
are an exploration of three dimensional geometric
abstraction. Using precious and semi-precious stones with
silver and gold, Ueno’s work emphasizes the importance
and beauty of color, pattern and texture. Ueno’s
inspiration comes from her memories of reading fairytales
as a child, resulting in whimsical pieces that evoke
imagination and amusement. www.yumidesign.com
