Social media’s fast becoming the go-to place for all kinds of news – including the bad and dangerous kind. So what happens when disaster strikes? When crime occurs down the street? First-responders, city officials, and law enforcement are now using Facebook and Twitter to issue updates and manage citizen queries. But it’s a relatively young process that the press and the public can help improve. The question is: How?

On Wednesday, March 14th, join KPCC’s Kim Bui (social media editor) and guest panelists who’ll address how social media’s being used by government agencies; what the reaction’s been to online tools; and where journalists and regular people fit in to the info-spreading picture.

6:30pm – Doors Open
7:00pm – Program

Admission is free, but RSVP’s are required.

BIL Conference 2012

BIL Conference 2012

BIL Conference 2012

Friday, March 2, 2012 at 4:00 PM – Sunday, March 4, 2012 at 6:00 PM (PT)
Long Beach, CA

Most of you have heard of TED or watched the talks online, but do you know about BIL, the quirky, populist, unconference taking place nearby?  Open to the public and fully participant powered, BIL features a wild mix of technologists, scientists, artists, hackers, and those with a passion for community awareness.  Join us March 3-4 on the historic Queen Mary, docked in Long Beach, California.

BIL is an un-conference — organized and observed by the participants. BIL emerged from a community of people who aspire to change the world for the better. It’s a place for passionate people to come together, energize, brainstorm, and take action! Everyone at BIL shares a common trait: BILders are the everyman thinkers and doers of today and for tomorrow.

Expect to hear a lot of topics covered, from life extension and robotics, to D.I.Y. biology, social change, the future of the pharmaceutical industry, and open hardware hacking.  This year, many members of local L.A. hackerspaces and the Space Industry will participate and you can hear about the exciting technologies being developed by these amazing tinkerers.  We have invited a great group of speakers, and found an amazing venue- but the rest is up to you, because YOU are BIL!

Don’t miss this fantastic weekend of mind expanding discussion and our amazing speakers! Sign up now to ensure you are part of the action and check out: www.BILconference.com.

Asus Prime Tablet

Asus Prime Tablet

I found the Asus Prime series of tablets far outshines anything Apple can throw at the market right now.

The current Prime already outshines the iPad 2 and the next Asus Prime (Infinity) with its Quad core processor and HD resolution (1900X) is stunning.

Apple has had it their way for too long charging exorbitant prices for less than cutting edge technology and selling it to unsuspecting customers who aren’t tech savvy.

Update:
Apple Invite Includes Image Of iPad
Apple Invite Says ‘We Have Something You Really Have To See. And Touch’
Apple Hosting Event In San Francisco On March 7, is this also in addition to NY?

So what is in store for use with the iPad 3?

– higher-resolution 2048×1536 ‘retina’ display,
– 1GHz quad-core Apple A6 processor
– 4G connectivity,
a few other update we are yet to learn… stay tuned for video and pictures of the iPad 3.

Is 4G far behind for the iPhone? It is interesting that the iPhone now will lag behind the iPad in feature specs.

Best Buy dropped the price of Apple iPad 2 models by $50 this past weekend
