City of Pasadena Leadership Changes – What is Going on? Loss of Many Years of Experience and Knowledge

Maybe it’s just a sign of the times and it is coincidental, but there is some cause for concern that there are many positions within the city experiencing a change.

So far we know that

City Manager Steve Mermell- is exiting/retiring on Dec 2. 2021. having worked for the city for approx  32 years

Assistant City Manager Julie Gutierrez, exiting November 18, 2021, having worked for the city for approx 32 years

Police Chief John Perez, having worked for the city for approx 36 years

Andy Wilson – Councilmember representing District 7, and is currently Vice-Mayor, is not seeking re-election to spend his time as Executive Director for The Alliance for Southern California Innovation (, a nonprofit established to accelerate the growth of high tech and life science start-ups in the Southern California region.

We have also heard that the Pasadena Fire Department is also undergoing some changes in leadership.

While all these changes are cause for concern, what is more concerning is that the current Mayor has not stayed in front of these developments and communicated with the residents of these developments and a plan to fill the positions being left open.

Meanwhile, homelessness and crime are increasing in the city.

There is talk of a possible 8th district being formed for the central/downtown area of Pasadena.

Steve Mermell Pasadena City Manager Stepping Down/Retiring in December 2, 2021

Update: We have also learned Julie Gutierrez, Assistant City Manager, is also leaving. Her last day will be November 18, 2021.*

News broke that Pasadena City Manager Steve Mermell has announced that he is stepping down, retiring. After decades, having started work with the city in 1989, in various capacities with the City of Pasadena,, Mr. Mermell announced that his last day will be December 2, 2021.

Mermell worked under the previous city manager Michael Beck who left under the city debacle with embezzlement of funds, that cost the city millions in insurance claims and premiums and the litigation continues.

Mermell has endured controversy as the cities most senior official not elected by voters. From the embezzlement, to care facilities, health department, cannabis, large scale development, police and fire chiefs, police involved shooties, and others.

Mermell has served as City Manager of Pasadena for about 5 years and earns total pay and benefits approximately $500,000 per year.

No replacement or interim person has been named.  Now the search is on, we hope that city council and the mayor will help to make the process inclusive and listen to its residents when it comes to the issues that are most important to constituents.

Note:  In my several interactions with Mr. Mermell they have been pleasant.  It is a challenging job and I acknowledge him for the work he has done.

Apple iOS15 Released September 20, 2021 Release Notes #iOS15

After a busy past week with iOS 14.8 release to address security concerns, and new iPhone 13 models now Apple has released iOS 15 for compatible devices.   Looks like a significant amount of updates and we would expect a patch to be released within the next week or two to address bugs/fixes.
