We discussed in the last post about the launch of iPad launch in the UK and its cost as compared to the ones in USA. In the same post, we also told about the Orange pricing plan. Lets have a detailed look at it.
The plan that was revealed by Apple for the iPad usage in UK, includes a novel pay-for-what-you-use scheme.
The key plan bills data at a rate of five pence per megabyte up to a monthly maximum of £40. That’s 800MB.
Orange will also offer daily and weekly one-off connectivity. A day’s surfing costs £2 and gives you 200MB of data. A week’s bundled access will set you back £7.50 and give you a 1GB allowance. Exceed those limits and you’ll be billed at the 5p/MB rate.
To up the limit, you can go for a £15 or £25 monthly deal which come with, respectively, 3G and 10GB of data plus ‘unlimited’ – 750MB, in fact – Wi-Fi hotspot browsing though BT Openzone. Again, bust the limit and you’ll pay 5p/MB for the excess.
Activate any of these plans and we’ll give you £10 credit, Orange said.
Orange said it will take orders for the micro Sim cards the iPad uses on 10 May – the day Apple UK starts offering pre-orders.
The eagerly waiting British lovers of the iPad will have to pay around £100 more than Americans for Apple’s iPad when it goes on sale in the UK next week.
According to the sources, prices will start at £429 for the cheapest version of the tablet computer, nearly £90 more than the US price of $499 converted at today’s exchange rate. For the most expensive version of the iPad, a 64 GB model offering wi-fi and 3G connections, the premium is more than £130.
The tablet computer will be available to pre-order online from May 2010 and will be in stores from May 28, following a delay which Apple blamed on “strong demand” in the US.
If we look into the history, Apple has always set UK prices higher than in the US, blaming the “cost of doing business” in Britain.
Simultaneously, Orange set out how it will charge customers buying an iPad with 3G capability.
Users will pay £2 a day, with a 200MB allowance, or £7.50 a week, with 1GB of usage, to connect to Orange’s network. It will also offer two monthly contracts, pitched at £15 and £25, with different download caps.
Orange has also unveiled an unusual per-megabyte pricing model that will allow users to pay 5p per MB they use. The pricing model is different to traditional pre-pay packages for mobile and dongle users and harks back to the days of dial-up internet where consumers paid whenever they connected to the network rather than upfront.
Prince Harry has been selected by the British Army commanders to train as an Apache attack helicopter pilot, boosting the 25-year-old’s hopes of returning to the front lines in Afghanistan.
Prince Harry, who received his pilot’s wings from his father, Prince Charles, said it was a “huge honor” to learn to fly “an awesome helicopter.”
“There is still a huge mountain for me to climb if I am to pass the Apache training course,” he said in a statement issued by his London office.
“To be honest, I think it will be one of the biggest challenges in my life so far,” the statement said. “I am very determined, though, as I do not want to let down people who have shown faith in my ability to fly this aircraft on operations.”
The prince, who is third in line to the British throne and is known in the military as Lt. Harry Wales, passed his basic helicopter training course last month.
He was one of nine training pilots awarded their provisional wings by Prince Charles, who is Colonel in Chief of the Army Air Corps.
“You are looking very smart, if I may say so,” Charles told his son as he inspected the graduates. Chelsy Davy, who has long been romantically linked with Harry, was in attendance, cheering loudly when his name was called out as the winner of the Peter Adams Trophy, a prize for the best tactical ability during the operational training phase.
Harry’s success at basic training granted him the right to choose to apply to train on either the Apache, or the Lynx, a battlefield utility helicopter. His office said that Army Air Corps commanders judged that the prince’s skills and flying abilities best suited the Apache, which was designed to hunt and destroy tanks.
The helicopter has been extensively used in Afghanistan to assault enemy ground positions and fly cover for Chinook heavy-lift support helicopters.
Harry has made no secret of his desire to return to the front lines in Afghanistan.
The young royal — who was denied the chance to go to Iraq when the British army said it was too risky — served in Afghanistan in 2008 as a battlefield air controller until his time was cut short by a media leak.
Flying is in the family’s royal blood: Harry’s older brother, William, is learning to fly search-and-rescue choppers. Charles qualified as a helicopter pilot in 1974, and their uncle, Prince Andrew, flew a Royal Navy helicopter during the Falklands War.
