Europe – Ash Clouds disrupt flights again

Recent activity in the Eyjafjallajokull volcano

The Ash clouds have again came up which have resulted in cancelling and diversion of flights. Spain has closed 19 airports as a cloud of ash from an Icelandic volcano drifts south over Western Europe.

The government said over 400 flights would be cancelled, leaving almost 40,000 people stuck in airports stretching from La Coruna in the northwest to Barcelona in the northeast.

Air traffic was expected to be affected until 00:00 GMT on Sunday morning, at which time flights would gradually resume.

On this, the government said there was a chance the cloud could still be affecting Spain next week.

The diversion of Flights

Most flights between Europe and North America are being diverted because of the ash cloud’s latest drifting, officials at Eurocontrol, the agency that co-ordinates aviation safety in Europe, said.

Flights are being rerouted north and south of the 2,000km long cloud.

The Spanish national airport management agency (Aena) said the airports affected were Barcelona, Girona, Sabadell, Bilbao, San Sebastian, Vitoria, Zaragoza, Huesca, Pamplona, Logrono, Santiago, La Coruna, Vigo, Asturias, Santander, Leon, Valladolid, Burgos and Salamanca.

Airspace across Europe was closed down for up to a week last month after the eruption of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano, but was reopened after emergency talks between European governments, airlines and regulators.

Eurocontrol warned on Saturday of a rise in emissions from the volcano.

“The area of potential ash contamination is expanding in particular between the ground and 20,000 feet,” it said.

Mobile Phone giant NOKIA sues APPLE over iPad

The mobile phone manufacturing giant NOKIA has filed a lawsuit against Apple claiming the iPad 3G and iPhone infringe five of its patents. Last year Nokia sued Apple over violating its patent on wireless technology on the iPhone.

<Image Credit>

As a reaction to that, Apple counter-sued Nokia claming that Nokia had stolen 13 patents from the company. Now Nokia’s back on the counter-counter-offensive, suing Apple for stealing proprietary technologies for the iPad, and Apple’s stock has taken an early 5% hit in trading.

Apple and Nokia likely won’t be in court for the next two years for the iPhone suit. And Apple’s already hedged itself, so to speak, with outstanding suits against Google and HTC for violating the iPhone’s touch-screen technology (touch-screen tech is not a factor in the Nokia-Apple wars). To review, the world’s largest cell phone maker is suing the world’s largest smart-phone marker who’s counter-suing and also suing the world’s faster growing smart-phone operating system designer. The future is mobile, and litigious.

These suits are often a combination of frivolousness and earnest attempts to defend inventions. One reason we have patent law is to reward creativity and innovation. We diminish the incentive to build the next great touchscreen technology or space-saving wireless feature if innovators expect that their new idea will simply be swiped by their competitor a few months after his product hit stores.

Taking that into account, this could also simply be a defensive posture on Nokia’s part. The largest maker of cell phones is also losing mightily to Google and Apple in the high-end smart-phone market where the industry is trending.

About TED

TED is an annual event where some of the world’s leading thinkers and doers are invited to share what they are most passionate about. “TED” stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design — three broad subject areas that are, collectively, shaping our future. And in fact, the event is broader still, showcasing ideas that matter in any discipline. Attendees have called it “the ultimate brain spa” and “a four-day journey into the future.” The diverse audience — CEOs, scientists, creatives, philanthropists — is almost as extraordinary as the speakers, who have included Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Frank Gehry, Paul Simon, Sir Richard Branson, Philippe Starck and Bono.

Char Broil Grills customer support and quality

I’ve been reading about the various grills, looking to buy a new grill, and started reading about the Char Broil model 46340708 which has some pretty bad reviews.

I was eyeing the grill at Fry’s in the latest ad at $199! A great deal on paper. But not with all the troubles people are reporting. If it last a year and starts to rust, etc.. and customer support doesn’t respond and denies claims for get it, I will buy a Kenmore, Weber, Brinkmann, or some other brand.

In particular I was dismayed at the poor reviews of CharBroil customer service, that alone would make me not want to buy their products. Poor quality and Poor customer support is a formula to not buy their products.
