HYPERBOLIC synthesizes sculptural form and mathematical complexity by inserting contemporary manipulations into the traditional craft of crochet. The extraordinary product of that process is a representation of coral reef structures that are tantalizingly beautiful yet provocatively challenging in their commentary about oceanic health.
An apt description of design is innovation at the intersection of art and science. Social responsibility and ecological consciousness are central themes in today’s world, and they compel us to integrate science into any design equation. Margaret and Christine Wertheim’s coral reef project is a captivating example of creativity informed by science. It reveals how the complexities of nature can embody core principles to which design in the 21st century must aspire. — Stephen Nowlin, Director, Williamson Gallery
HYPERBOLIC has been organized by the Institute for Figuring (IFF) and Companions. It was created and curated by twin sisters Margaret and Christine Wertheim.
