The remarkably fast growth of community ventures such as Friendster, MySpace, Facebook, Twitter and – by definition – “the next big thing” (Google Buzz? Yes? No? Why?) raises classic questions: why do people use a site, what will keep folks coming back, can it stay ahead of the competition, how can it be monetized? Why does one great idea embodied in a wonderful business plan yield heavy traffic and meaningful revenue, yet another fails?
Are the answers unique to social media and unlike those for killer tangible products (whether Walkman of yore or today’s iPhone)? How does attracting an audience conflate with monetizing it? For social media does “attract-hold-monetize” success come from touchie-feelie insight or count-measure-analyze? The reality of real time mass response suggests that divining answers requires more complex analysis than just dissecting today’s traffic leader. And international differences stand to multiply the challenge even more. Our speakers today will draw on extensive experience to explore the attractions and dynamics of drawing a crowd on the Internet, keeping it, and making a profit too.
