It is important for you to know that Arabica beans contain much less caffeine than Robusta and other hybrid beans which are commonly used in many coffee blends for extra caffeine. These Robusta and hybrid beans can contain up to 50% more caffeine. Exposure to heat also destroys caffeine and our beans are roasted to a Vienna or dark roast. This means that our beans are exposed to more heat, thus less caffeine, than say a ‘light’ roast coffee which would contain more caffeine. The rule is, the darker the roast the less caffeine.

Arabica beans are also known for their great robust flavor. It is considered the Premium bean in the coffee industry and the demand is high which makes it much pricier than other beans. In addition to high demand dictating price, the Arabica coffee bushes are very susceptible to disease and entire crops can be wiped out quickly causing the price for these beans to remain higher than all other beans. Of course, there are small price differences depending upon the region the coffee originated, altitude and whether it is organic, shade grown, and/or fair traded coffee.

A note about caffeine: Many people are accustomed to drinking instant processed coffee products that are just added to hot water. These types of instant processed coffees usually contain a nutrition facts panel that lists the amount of caffeine per serving. This is possible in the case of instant processed coffee because it is manufactured in large batches that can be tested and “adjusted” before the product is packaged for sale.

The amount of caffeine in whole coffee beans can vary depending upon the age of the coffee plant, the ripeness of the bean when picked, the degree of roasting, and the soil in which the beans grow.
