and Ribbon Cutting

The Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS) Department will host the
grand opening of the Washington Park Community House on Jan. 13, 10 a.m. to noon,
at Washington Park, 700 E. Washington Blvd. The grand opening will feature a ribbon
cutting ceremony followed by program demonstrations, information booths, and
activities for all ages to enjoy.

restroom, accessible office for recreation staff, and a separate 564-square-foot park
restroom building with a maintenance storage room. The facility also includes a 1,000-

Washington Park Master Plan was adopted by the City Council on November 22,
2004. The Master Plan includes the development of a new, approximately 2,000-
square-foot “Community House” to be located adjacent to the park’s existing parking
lot along Washington Boulevard. City Council fully funded the design of the
Washington Park Community House and Restroom project as part of the Fiscal Year
(FY) 2020 Capital Improvements Program (CIP) Budget.

The Public Works Department initiated conceptual design of the project in February
2020 in close collaboration with various community stakeholders, including Friends of
Washington Park and the City’s PRCS staff who operate community programs and

maintain the park. Multiple community meetings were noticed and held through the
design development of the project to receive input and maximize public programming
and use of the facility. Also, the Northwest Commission and Recreation and Parks
Commission both voted unanimously to support the concept design in September and
November 2020, respectively.

Upon City Council’s appropriation of construction funds in FY 2022, an official
groundbreaking ceremony was held on June 20, 2022 to celebrate the start of
construction. Construction of this $3.3 million facility was completed in December
2023, and PRCS staff have moved-in and prepared the new space for community use
and programming.
