News broke that Pasadena City Manager Steve Mermell has announced that he is stepping down, retiring. After decades, having started work with the city in 1989, in various capacities with the City of Pasadena,, Mr. Mermell announced that his last day will be December 2, 2021.

Mermell worked under the previous city manager Michael Beck who left under the city debacle with embezzlement of funds, that cost the city millions in insurance claims and premiums and the litigation continues.

Mermell has endured controversy as the cities most senior official not elected by voters. From the embezzlement, to care facilities, health department, cannabis, large scale development, police and fire chiefs, police involved shooties, and others.

Mermell has served as City Manager of Pasadena for about 5 years and earns total pay and benefits approximately $500,000 per year.

No replacement or interim person has been named.  Now the search is on, we hope that city council and the mayor will help to make the process inclusive and listen to its residents when it comes to the issues that are most important to constituents.

Note:  In my several interactions with Mr. Mermell they have been pleasant.  It is a challenging job and I acknowledge him for the work he has done.
