Equifax Data Breach

As you have likely heard, the credit bureau Equifax suffered a data breach that has the potential to impact 143 million Americans. This breach occurred because of unauthorized access to Equifax’s systems, and was not in any way caused by unauthorized access to any of the Credit Union’s systems. While there is no way to know with certainty whether you are affected, you can take several steps to protect yourself.

  • To help determine if your information may have been compromised, Equifax has established a dedicated website, www.equifaxsecurity2017.com, which includes information about the breach, a search tool to determine if you may have been impacted, and the option to opt in to credit monitoring services offered by Equifax. You can also call Equifax at 866-447-7559 any day of the week, including weekends, from 4:00 am – 10:00 pm PT.
  • Visit www.identitytheft.gov for resources on identity theft, freezing your credit report, and steps to take with the three different credit bureaus to dispute any unauthorized activity.
  • If you experience fraud on your account, place a fraud alert with any of the three credit bureaus – Experian, Equifax, or Trans Union – to alert potential creditors and lenders to take extra steps to identify you.
  • Check your credit report for suspicious activity. Get a free copy of your credit report every year at www.annualcreditreport.com. If you find any unauthorized activity, notify the related financial institution or other agency immediately.
  • Consider signing up for a service that routinely monitors your credit and protects your identity. Logix offers this type of service through Merchants Information Services, which also includes assistance with recovering your identity should it be stolen.
  • Finally, consider activating two services available through Online Banking to further protect your account: Multi-Factor Authentication and Customizable Text and Email Alerts. Turn on Multi-Factor Authentication and receive a passcode alert to successfully log in each time an attempt is made to access your Online Banking account.
