Today while at Whole Foods in Pasadena Arroyo Parkway store I had the pleasure of meeting Dave Tabaczynski, Chief Microbiologist with Mass Probiotics, Inc.
Their product drink phd is available at many Whole Foods in the California area.
Good Gut Bugs – Probiotocs
– 6 probiotoc strains
– prebiotoc fiber
– great tasting water
– alive = effective
Dave is very knowledgeable about the probiotic industry and what to look for and the competitive products including yogurts and kombucha products, recently there was a retreat by producers and grocers including Whole Foods with kombucha because of the alcohol content. The FDA stepped in and most stores pulled the products off the shelves. If you produce kombucha at a location like the Culture Club in Pasadena you can still buy and make Kombucha.
Orange Detox has strains that are particularly good at 1. fighting yeast, 2. colonizing the large intestine, and 3. being acid resistant.
Often we find that most people who are taking antibiotics or have an imbalance in their gut need the above mentioned combination of attributes. The detox is more of a phrase that is thrown around when people feel like their gut has gone toxic from an overgrowth of yeast.
Certain bacteria are antagonistic to yeast through the chemicals they make and via the environment they create in the gut. You need the right chemicals along with the right acid balance to really push yeast out. In the commercial probiotic world, the strains of interest are 1. Bifidobacterium longum, 2. Lactobacillus acidophillis, 3. Lactobacillus bulgaricus, and 4. Bacillus coagulans. In our detox product we use the first two strains. We also put in strains like L salivarius because they do a very good job of setting the stage for the B. longum to colonize.

Here’s some info from the website on the phd Probiotic Healthy Daily – What are Propbiotics
what are probiotics?
Probiotic literally means “for life”. Sometimes referred to as “live active cultures,” probiotics are the beneficial bacteria that form a protective layer in our digestive tract. The World Health Organization defines probiotics as “live microorganisms which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host.” Probiotics help to keep our digestive and immune systems functioning as nature intended.
To be effective, probiotics must be:
- Alive when administered
- Documented to have a health benefit
- Administered in sufficient amounts to have a benefit
While some of the probiotic products on the market do not have all three criteria, phd™ does — ensuring you are getting an effective dosage.
where do probiotics come from?
10% of the average human’s body weight comes from beneficial bacteria that naturally reside in our digestive system. The probiotics we use are clinically discovered strains of bacteria that have been shown to have a positive impact on health. You can also ingest probiotics as naturally-occurring bacteria in fermented fruits and vegetables such as sauerkraut, miso, and kimchi, as well as in some yogurt and diairy products that have active cultures.
what benefits do probiotics offer?
There have been thousands of studies conducted on the benefits of probiotics by major U.S. and European institutions, and it is generally accepted that probiotics promote immune function and support a healthy digestive balance. Numerous additional studies are starting to uncover additional benefits of probiotics.
