Bisphenol A Facts
- bisphenol A (BPA) is one of the most widely used industrial chemicals with about 7 billion pounds produced annually.
- bisphenol A is a chemical that mimics the female sex hormone estrogen.
- bisphenol A is always found in polycarbonate plastic (#7)
- 5 gallon water bottles, baby bottles, sports bottles and microwave cookware are made of polycarbonate and contain bisphenol A.
- many food and beverage cans have a plastic lining made from bisphenol A.
- bisphenol A gets into food and beverages stored in these containers and then makes its way into the human body.
- bispenol A is found in the bodies of nearly everyone tested for it in the USA.
- because of ethical concerns, no human studies have been done on BPA.
- Dr Frederic Vom Saal of the University of Missouri is one of the leading researchers on estrogenic chemicals in plastics – mainly bisphenol A.
- As of 2005, there have been 115 published studies examining low doses of the chemical and 94 of them found harmful effects from BPA.
- animal studies link BPA to breast and prostate cancer, obesity and diabetes, hyperactivity, female reproductive disorders and early onset of puberty, impaired brain development and permanent genetic changes.
- levels of BPA in humans are higher than levels found to cause harm in animals.
- fetuses and infants are most vulnerable to the chemical’s effects.

- In 2005 Patagonia Inc. ceased sale of polycarbonate sports bottles.
- In 2006 Whole Foods Markets ceased sale of polycarbonate baby bottles.
- In 2007 Mountain Equipment Co-op, the largest sporting goods chain in Canada, stopped selling all polycarbonate food and beverage containers.
- Feb 2007 study by Environment California titled “Toxic Baby Bottles” found BPA leached from all 5 brands of polycarbonate baby bottles tested.
- April 22, 2008 Nalgene announced it will stop using plastic containing BPA.
- October 18, 2008, Canada declares bisphenol A toxic.
- Toys ‘R’ Us stopped selling bisphenol A baby bottles in 2008.
- September 16, 2008 the first human study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that people with higher levels of urinary BPA had increased rates of heart disease, diabetes and liver enzyme abnormailties.
- May 13, 2009 Chicago becomes the nation’s first city to ban baby bottles and sippy cups containing bisphenol A.
- June 2, 2009 California’s Senate approves a bill to ban BPA in baby bottles and other food containers. The Chemical Industry will oppose it in the Assembly.
- Every day bottled water companies deliver water to homes and businesses in 5 gallon polycarbonate bottles that contain bisphenol A. Polycarbonate has a #7 on the bottom of the bottle in the recycle triangle. Look for it!
