Arroyo Food Co-Cop Altadena

This past Saturday the co-op held a meeting at Yoga House on State Street.

November flyer

Right now looking for about 500 founding members to come in with $300 for capital and toward start-up costs. Construction is slated to begin next summer.

Get involved!

For the price of a few bags of groceries ($300), you vote for a better connection to the sources of your food. You support a local business. You join a fun group that’s making a difference in our community.

Our initial goal is to have 500 members by the end of the year. Yes, it’s ambitious. But if we pull this off, we’ll set ourselves up for starting construction next summer.

With our plans and legal documents in place, we now need your help.

Read more at our Frequently Asked Questions page and our business plan. (a 7.7M pdf file)

Then please download the membership agreement, fill it out and mail it in with your check!

If you get in early you will be entitled to member only events and discounts on store items.

Anyone will be able to shop at the co-op.

This is great for Altadena.

This Saturday:

On Saturday November 21st, at 10:00am, we’re going to hold a volunteer orientation at the Altadena Community Center. Think of this as our job fair. At the beginning I’ll update you on our latest progress. Then the team leaders will make themselves available for one-on-one discussions. You’ll have the chance to talk with them, get a better understanding of the available tasks, let the team leader(s) know who you are and see if you can find something to start on.

Sustainable

With a consumer food cooperative store in (or near) Altadena we can offer more organic products than conventional stores. Compared to the large health food stores we’ll buy in smaller quantities so we can develop relationships with local sources and offer a greater variety of fresh products from nearby. We can devote more attention to improving our sustainable offerings since this will be a big part of our mission.

Practical

Our small grocery store can offer wholesome bulk items, fresh produce and everyday staples at reasonable prices. Convenience foods, made with SLO (Sustainable/Seasonal Local Organic) ingredients can also be available. A good sized co-op can save us time and money by not having to travel into Pasadena (or beyond) for sustainable products. Everyone will be welcome to shop there.

Empowering

Our food co-op can act as a learning center for sustainable living – a way to connect to others in our area that are looking for new ways to live a more green lifestyle. Buying from a co-op can be the best way to vote for a better world with our grocery dollars. With a community room we can hold classes, meetings and social events. With a kitchen we can offer honest and satisfying convenience foods plus process neighborhood produce. All this will also give a few of our neighbors decent jobs.

Does Pasadena have a co-op? not that I know of.
Where are the community gardens in Pasadena? For a city the size of Pasadena and with so much open space available it is hard to imagine that the city has one small corner of community garden. Will this become a priority for a city that prides itself on forward thinking? Even cities like Alhambra have a burgeoning community garden.
