Amazon to Compete with NetFlix Streaming Movies $79 per year

At 7:50am this morning we are learning about a new service that Amazon will be unveiling.  The main competitor is NetFlix in the movie rental service.

What could Amazon have planned? A service that offers current movies? Perhaps a slicker interface or box?

As a Netflix subscriber we are paying $8/mo to watch as many movies as we want on our Wii. Will Amazon have a product that competes effectively with this?

One thing about NetFlix on the Wii, or just the NetFlix interface is that it doesn’t let you sort either by release date or by ratings.

What we know so far about the Amazon service. If you are a Amazon Prime member at $79 per year you will be able to watch over 5,000 unlimited commercial free instant streaming movies and tv shows at NO additional cost.

How do these movies compare against those on NetFlix?  Which service will have the first release on new movies?

The announcement will be made by Jeff Bezos Amazon CEO.

Check out the Amazon Instant Movie Streaming Here

– For $79 per year this is a pretty good deal. Amazon is figuring out how to raise the revenue per customer/member and this is genius if they can offer comparable service to NetFlix.

Amazon Video on Demand: Unlimited Streaming of 5000+ Movies & TV Shows with Amazon Prime Membership $79/year
Amazon offers unlimited, commercial-free, instant streaming of 5,000 movies and TV shows for Free when you sign up for Amazon Prime membership for $79/year. Thanks queenpon
Note, if you are currently an Amazon Prime member (paying $79/year), you will receive these services at no additional cost

Enough is enough! This needs to stop and these so called “pirates” need to be dealt with accordingly.

Get Ready to Sizzle this Summer

18th Annual Oxnard Salsa Festival Celebrates Salsa Food, Music and Dance!

Oxnard, CAReady to salsa? Mark your calendar for the 18th Annual Oxnard Salsa Festival, an incredible salsa celebration on July 30-31, 2011 at Plaza Park, Fifth and “B” Streets in downtown Oxnard. The Festival runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday and celebrates everything salsa … the food, the music and the dance!

Presented by the Oxnard Downtowners, the event features spicy food and fiery entertainment that draws nearly 50,000 salsa lovers to the City of Oxnard for the two-day action packed celebration. Event highlights include Main Stage entertainment with salsa and Latin bands; a large salsa tasting tent; an eclectic vendor marketplace; international foods; kids korner attractions including tortilla art; a salsa recipe contest and more. Event admission and parking are free.

The Food …

With salsa tasting and spicy foods on the menu, visitors have plenty of opportunities to tantalize their taste buds. The Festival offers everything from authentic Mexican fare to roasted corn and cool summer treats. Inside the Salsa Tasting Tent, local restaurants, Mexican markets, and gourmet salsa vendors serve a variety of salsa flavors — fresh & fruity, hot & smoky, and sweet & spicy creating fun and interesting combinations. Entry to the Salsa Tasting Tent is just $5 for ten tastes – chips included. Beverages are also available for purchase inside the tent.

The Music . . .

Southern California’s most exciting salsa and Latin jazz bands continue to grace the Main Stage at the annual Oxnard Salsa Festival. The hot, Latin rhythms are known for moving the audience to their feet as they ‘strut their stuff’ on the dance floor. Music plays continuously from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. both days.

The Dance . . .

Salsa dancing is a big part of the fun and experience at the Oxnard Salsa Festival. All ages can be seen on the large dance floor embracing the sounds of Salsa. And, as a local spin on the hit TV show Dancing with the Stars, high-profile members of the community assume starring roles as they are paired with salsa dance instructors in the “Dancing with Our Community Stars” Dance Contest & Charity Fundraiser benefitting local charities.

Shopping . . .

Besides food, music and dance, the Oxnard Salsa Festival also provides some unique shopping opportunities with an eclectic blend of vendors offering an array of handmade jewelry, pottery, children’s items, imported handicrafts and more.

About the Festival …

The Oxnard Salsa Festival was launched in 1994 by the Oxnard Downtowners to bring people into the downtown business district to celebrate Oxnard’s multicultural heritage and agricultural roots. Over the years, the Oxnard Salsa Festival has grown in popularity as salsa dancing and salsa music gained momentum. Today, the Salsa Festival is the City of Oxnard’s largest, free community event.

Getting Here …

Oxnard is located just 60 miles north of Los Angeles and 30 miles south of Santa Barbara. Visitors can travel to the Oxnard Salsa Festival by train, car, or bus. The Oxnard Transportation Center is conveniently located just three short blocks from the festivities at Plaza Park. Overnight accommodations are available throughout the City of Oxnard. Harvesting rainwater workshop in Pasadena

Rainwater harvesting workshop in Pasadena March 12

A rainwater harvesting workshop sponsored by Foothill Municipal Water District, Glendale Water and Power, Pasadena Water and Power and Burbank Water and Power, will be held on Sat., March 12.  Participants will learn principles, practices and tips for water-harvesting earthworks and rain gardens.

The workshop will be taught by inspiring speaker Brad Lancaster.  Brad Lancaster harvests rainwater, grey water and storm water to create water abundance instead of water scarcity. His fifteen plus years of experience in permaculture consulting, design and education has focused on integrated and sustainable approaches to landscape design, planning and living.  He also created the website  www.HarvestingRainwater.com.

“Rain gardens conserve water, replenish groundwater supplies and create sustainable oases around homes,” said Nina Jazmadarian, General Manager of FMWD.

The event will be from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Salvation Army Pasadena Tabernacle, 960 E. Walnut St., Pasadena, CA 91106.  Registration is required to attend.  Participants can register at  www.PasadenaSavesWater.com.

“Living in a semi-arid climate, it is important to find a way to capture rainwater and put it to good use.  Rain gardens quickly infiltrate rainfall into the soil where less is lost to evaporation,” said Nancy Long, Water Conservation Manager for Pasadena Water & Power.

Rain barrel examples will be displayed at the event.  Raffle prizes include two rain barrels as well as for four sets of books published by Brad Lancaster:  Rainwater Harvesting for Drylands and Beyond Volume 1: Guiding Principals to Welcome Rain Into Your Life and Landscape and Rainwater Harvesting for Drylands and Beyond Volume 2: Water-Harvesting Earthworks.  Product exhibitors will also be present, some offering discounts to consumers.

For questions about the event, please contact Jennifer Hao at jhao@cityofpasadena.net or (626) 744-7926

Level 2 Battery Chargers for Electric Cars, Nissan Leaf

This posting serves as a resource for those of you like me searching for options for level 2 battery chargers for your home.

Perhaps you have already placed an order for the Nissan Leaf or maybe you have an electric car already and are looking for a new level 2 charger.

Level 2 chargers are the most affordable of the chargers available as they can charge your vehicle in approx 7-8 hours to about 90% of the charge.

Trickle charges are not really recommended as they take 2-3 times as long as a level 2 charger.

We have seen in the past year level 2 chargers in the $700-$2000 range.

I am currently reaching out to companies that manufacture the level 2 chargers and below is the start of the list, I’ll include the pros and cons of each.
