Burbank Fiber

I’ve been working on a project at my office to connect buildings and have been talking to the city about their fiber network.

Burbank is leading the way with fiber offerings, it is a great way to attract media companies with multiple locations within the city limits and beyond.

Basically you pay $200/mo per strand of fiber for the first mile! This is a great deal.  Most locations can have up to 24 strands of fiber. Imagine what you can transfer with 24 strands of fiber!

Anyway, the process is fairly straight forward, and I’ll be providing more details as we progress.

Another development is that the City of Burbank will be offering internet services on the fiber network, so basically you can get an ethernet handoff and access to the internet along with the fiber. The service is said to be very competitively priced.

In other news, Charter Communications which is also striving to provide competitive internet data services is close to completing upgrades to DOCSIS which will enable Charter to offer speeds of 60mb down and 10up, which is comparable to Verizon Fios. DOCSIS 3.0.

Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) is an international standard developed by CableLabs and contributing companies that include: ARRIS, BigBand Networks, Broadcom, Cisco, Conexant, Correlant, Harmonic, Intel, Motorola, Netgear, Terayon, and Texas Instruments. DOCSIS defines the communications and operation support interface requirements for a data over cable system. It permits the addition of high-speed data transfer to an existing Cable TV (CATV) system.

$94 for Hot-Air-Balloon Ride and Picnic With Sunrise Balloon

  • Sunrise_balloons

When our highways and subterranean luge routes are overrun by traffic, we will turn to the skies to meet our transportation needs. For $94, today’s Groupon gets you a preview of the future of transportation with a one-hour, single-flight hot-air-balloon ride with a floating champagne picnic through Sunrise Balloon in Temecula. Secede from your stale relationship with the ground for a picturesque flight above wine country that’s packed with wining, dining, and professional photography to remind you what well-groomed clouds look like.

Pilot Dan Glick hasn’t put his feet on the ground once in the last 35 years, constantly ushering sightseers through the aerial beauty above Temecula and wine country. You’ll meet at the conference room in the Inn at Churon Winery for a pre-flight reception, calming floating fever with morning coffee before a champagne picnic breakfast treats your appetite while in flight. Sunrise will capture your launch on HD video and will snap more than 100 professional photographs throughout the journey so you can always cherish and treasure the moment you returned to the condor-people. For special occasions, Sunrise can hang banners proclaiming birthdays, anniversaries, or congratulations on legally adopting an adult man dressed like a panda. Your flight concludes with a round of champagne, cider, and cake and additional proof of your venture with a souvenir flight certificate. You also get two-for-one wine tasting coupons.

Spending time suspended in the air gives you ample time to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and contemplate all that gets pushed aside. With Sunrise’s gorgeous aerial tour, you’ll have the mental break necessary for brainstorming better ways to pickle eggs and how many chick peas are too many chick peas.

Be sure to make your reservation in advance.

* The attention of the staff and the experience of the hot air balloon ride was a very memorable birthday for my partner. The staff really made it a special day…We were very pleased with both Megan and our pilot Dan Glick. He filled our request to travel a little higher altitude and we did, it was an awesome experience! He is very knowledgable [sic], professional and freindly. [sic] – Tanya, Google Maps
* I have been on several hot air balloon rides over the years and this was hands down THE VERY BEST. Megan met us all in the morning with coffee…We were a diverse crowd, but everyone became fast friends. As we went up over the valley, it was magical. The weather was perfect, we could see everywhere… – GracieGracieGracie, TripAdvisor
* You get a good view of the city, vineyards, and neighboring cities, mountains, and lakes…It was complete silence up in the air as sound doesn’t travel that far up. A pretty serene experience…No turbulence. – Jack L., Yelp

Ping.fm already updates Google Buzz instantly from txt, apps, email
Hi, Team Seesmic Friends,
With all the buzz around Google Buzz, I have some exciting news to share! If you add your Google Talk (GTalk) account to Ping.fm and then add Gtalk as a service to Google Buzz, you will instantly update Google Buzz exactly at the same time as Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook and the 50 social networks supported by Ping.fm. It is also much faster than adding Twitter as a service to Google Buzz which can be delayed up to an hour for your updates to show on Buzz. You can then update ping.fm from any app supporting it (all Seesmic apps very soon), sms, email or…. chat. Very handy.

Here is a step by step:

1. create a Ping.fm account if you don’t have one and add your favorite social networks to it

2. add your GTalk as a service in Ping.fm

image

3. add your GTalk to Google Buzz as a connected site

image

image

and voila! Each time you update ping from any app, sms, email… it will instantly update Buzz:

image

Bonus: if you add your GTalk  as a way to update ping as well, you can just update all your networks and buzz from GTalk as simply as if you were sending an im to anyone. Oh and a last tip if you want to Gchat something that you want NOT to appear in Buzz, put the status update between parenthesis.

Veoh Networks to Liquidate

Veoh Networks to Liquidate

By ANDREW MORSE

Veoh Networks Inc., a video-sharing Web site backed by high-profile
investors, said on Thursday it is closing and would liquidate under
bankruptcy protection.

“The distraction of the legal battles, and the challenges of the
broader macro-economic climate have led to our Chapter 7 bankruptcy,”
Dmitry Shapiro, the company’s founder and chief executive, wrote on
his personal site. “This chapter of our lives has come to an end.”

A spokesperson for Veoh didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment.

The closure was earlier reported by the All Things Digital blog, which
is owned by News Corp., which also publishes The Wall Street Journal.

San Diego-based Veoh, founded in 2004, was one of many promising
video-sharing start-ups and attracted funding from a host of
well-heeled investors. Those included the venture-capital operations
of Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Time Warner Inc., and Intel Corp. Veoh
also received funding from Tornante Co., Michael Eisner’s investment
vehicle.

The site, which had tried for years to carve out a niche by offering
both user-generated content and professional shows, was eclipsed by
rivals like Google Inc.’s YouTube and Apple Inc.’s iTunes. Veoh said
it attracted more than 28 million unique users per month world-wide.

Veoh’s shutdown comes despite a ruling in September that handed it a
victory in a closely watched legal battle with Vivendi SA’s Universal
Music Group. The music label had accused Veoh of infringing on its
copyrights by distributing online videos that featured music from its
artists, but a federal judge ruled the Digital Millennium Copyright
Act protected Veoh.

At the time, Mr. Shapiro said the site wasn’t yet profitable but
expected to be in the second quarter of 2010. Last year, the company
had informal talks with a number of companies to explore a sale or
investment, according to two people familiar with the talks.

• HIGHLINER, Santa Barbara County

With this, our top-of-the-line bottling, we blend our best barrels from our best vineyards. Our goal is to achieve balance and complexity in a graceful and elegant, yet compelling and complete expression of Pinot Noir from our region.

Highliner Pinot2003 was a warm vintage that on average set a very small crop of one ton/acre. We let this small crop hang extra long, so as to obtain optimum levels of ripe fruit flavors. We were able to pick each clone from each vineyard at full maturity (25+ degrees brix) between September 7th. and Sept 24th.

Our grapes were picked in perfect condition during the coolness of early mornings. We destemmed into 1.5 ton open top fermenters, and allowed a cold maceration over a 3 day period. We then innoculated with Assmenshausen yeast. We did many manual punchdowns of the grape skin cap during the early stages of the ferments, to achieve maximum extraction of color and flavor. After an 18 day fermentation, we pressed off the juice and went straight to barrel with lees. In barrel the wines completed malolactic and rested until racking just before bottling (unfiltered) in Feb. 2005. 2003 Highliner

For this Highliner, we chose a cuvee that was barrel aged in 65% new Francios Frere French oak barrels, sourcing 90% of the fruit from the Santa Rita Hills. This blend combines clones 777, 667, 115, 2A & 4. As we increase our vineyard sources and expand the clonal selection from each site, we have so much to work with in the blending process. With this full palette we have a tremendous opportunity to test our skills at crafting what we think is our best wine. To arrive at this, our favorite cuvee, we tried no less than 8 test blends.

This bottling shows the best of a well structured, graceful yet flavorful vintage. Full body, intense dark fruits, white pepper spice and earthiness, all tightly wound in a seamless package that is sure to give more and more as it opens with age.

The name “Highliner” comes from partner Gray Hartley’s 25 years of commercial fishing of Alaskan salmon. It was there that he worked along side the best fishermen in the fleet, and they were called “Highliners.” It seems only fitting for us to call the best wine of our lineup – “HIGHLINER.”

The mobile Food court with several food trucks are rolling into a newly created mobile food court at Alameda and Traction in Los Angeles. Trucks will be rolling in around noon today.

Put together by the SoCal Mobile Food Vendors Association
The monthly Art Walk but it will remain open daily, said Matt Geller, vice president of the association. Initially there will be about 3-4 trucks at the lot.
