General Information

The 2009 IEEE Radar Conference returns to the USA in Pasadena, California, May 4-8, after the 2008 conference in Rome, Italy. Our sponsors are the IEEE Los Angeles Council, the IEEE Coastal Los Angeles Section, and the IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Boeing Company are joint technical co-sponsors responsible for planning and implementing the conference, with support of an industry-wide team of organizers. RadarCon09 also returns to the West Coast for the first time since 2002, when it was chaired by Dr. Thomas Miller of The Raytheon Company and held in Long Beach, CA.

The conference theme, Radar: From Science to Systems, recognizes the Los Angeles area as a major aerospace center. It is one of a few areas in the world with a concentration of resident radar-focused organizations, including Raytheon, Boeing, Northrop Grumman Space Technologies, BAE Systems, Los Angeles Air Force Base, Space and Mission Systems Center, The Aerospace Corporation, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, as well as other industrial companies, and academic and research institutions. The breadth of expertise in the Los Angeles area is extensive, including research, development, production, testing, procurement and radar data applications and usage.

Our 2009 venue, the Pasadena Conference Center (PCC), is a bright, modern facility that supports our full range of events from the large Plenary Session and banquet to technical sessions and individual study. Its size and layout are very conducive to close technical and social interaction among attendees, presenters, and exhibitors. The PCC will have completed an overall renovation of its original facility and extension of ballroom and exhibition space. The location adjacent to popular Pasadena Old Town will integrate conference activities with the vibrant Pasadena social scene.

Our student program, supported by NASA, promises to be exciting: In addition to the student paper competition, we added an innovative radar/user mission design contest and will award conference grants to the selected winners. Finally, the conference is a unique, supportive atmosphere for learning and networking among students and radar professionals.

May is an excellent time of year in LA for a conference: the weather is beautiful – not too hot or too cold – and summer crowds have not yet arrived to enjoy the major attractions in the city. Cultural activities in Pasadena and the greater Los Angeles area, such as the symphony, opera, dance, and theatre, are in full swing; the major league baseball season will have begun; and Hollywood’s many attractions are just a short drive away.

We look forward to a marvelous confluence of content, culture, and climate, such that RadarCon09 in Pasadena will be a magnetic location for both local and international attendees; we eagerly look forward to your participation.
