Green Street News
August 21, 2009

If the “dog days of summer” occur in August, our dog must be a fluffy, manicured poodle. Cool foggy mornings, warm days and breezy evenings have made the last few weeks a joy to be in Pasadena. People are coming and going during this traditional vacation month (does anybody, besides the French, take a month off?) and I hope that wherever you are headed you are taking a little of Green Street with you. If you are flying somewhere to visit friends but want to enjoy a Dianne salad while you are away, no problem! Just order a Dianne Kit to be shipped to your destination. You can access all of our shipping options at www.GreenStreetrestaurant.com and click on “Shop & Ship”.
Side Dishes
The restaurant business is made up of thousands of details, some small and some large. Those who are successful are the ones who can consistently pay attention to each detail, no matter how little, and continuously improve. For us an example would be a food item like Cole Slaw.  Slaw is just a side dish, an accompaniment for some to their sandwich. We haven’t been completely happy with ours for a while and so we have offered a few different versions. We think you will like our current offering, which is a traditional tasty slaw, (a small detail to some, an important ingredient to others) that just got better.
It’s been a few months since we started offering Sweet Potato Fries as a choice for a side dish. The response has been overwhelming to our vendors and to us. I’m sure there is a guy in overalls standing out in his fields wondering why there is such a demand for his sweet potatoes. It’s been a challenge to always have the product available and some of you may have ordered the tasty fries to only be told that we were “sold out”. We think we have solved the availability problem and should now be able to keep up with the demand.
The Main Course
We have some great specials that have just come on the menu. They include the Pulled Pork Sandwich, the always-popular Mango Brie Quesadilla and a Shrimp Taco Salad. For a full listing and descriptions click here.
Dessert
Dr. Bob’s Peach Ice Cream is still the ice cream of choice and we will keep serving it until the good doctor tells us that he has used his last peach.
The Poll
We have a bi-weekly poll question on our website and we encourage you to participate in it. Recently we have learned that the favorite spot to go away for a weekend is an Orange County beach and the favorite quesadilla on the Green Street menu is the BBQ Quesadilla. Now we are asking you to tell us who you think pours the best cup of coffee. We’ll let you know the results in a future issue.
Wednesday Night Special
Our Wednesday night special will continue through September. Join us for a specially priced three-course menu ($26) and no corkage fee.
Featured Wine:
Brown Estate is a private family owned and operated Napa Valley winery estate tucked into the hills east of Rutherford. We’ve enjoyed their zinfandel in the past and now we have a rose, which they have named Betelgeuse. Betelgeuse is named after the red “supergiant” star that sits on the right “shoulder” of the constellation Orion. This is a wine that is very enjoyable, especially this time of the year, and is generally easy to drink and beyond refreshing with hints of honeydew, guava, ripe pear & white plum flavors. Read below for your special offer of this delightful wine from the Brown family.
Helping Out:
Beginning the week of August 24, 2009 the staffs from the City of Pasadena and Pasadena Unified School District will again provide an opportunity for community participation in the annual clothing and school supplies drive for the homeless population attending the public school system here in Pasadena. Clothing and other supplies and personal necessities are especially important as students go back to school. Drop items off at the PUSD Ed Center, Room 127 (First Floor, Families in Transition office) 351 S. Hudson or at the Pasadena City Hall N255, Administrative Offices for Human Services and Recreation Department, 100 N. Garfield Ave.
Items most needed are white polo shirts and pants, shorts, or skirts in navy, khaki and green. All sizes are needed and new or gently worn items are welcome. Also needed are school supplies (pens, pencils, sharpeners, erasers, paper etc.), toiletries for all ages, undergarments, including socks, feminine products and travel kits (sample size shampoos, conditioners, toothpaste, etc.)
See you at Green Street!

Bob, (Your Gazette Editor)

p.s. Here is a special, exclusive offer to our email readers. Order a bottle of Brown Estate Betelgeuse and receive $10 off. Remember, after you enjoy a glass the bottle may be corked and taken with you to enjoy at home (be sure to put it in your trunk when you are driving home). Just print this out and bring it to the restaurant or let your server know that you are one of our readers and want to take advantage of the Betelgeuse offer. Offer expires on August 30, 2009.
