ALDI Stores Coming to Southern California

The LA Times is reporting that ALDI is set to open 45 stores in the Southern California area by 2016.  The German grocer which also owns Trader Joe’s and competes with all the existing retailers including Wal-Mart, Costco, Vons/Safeway(which merged with Albertsons), Ralphs, Sprouts, and others,  is building a headquarters and distribution center in Moreno Valley.  The Moreno Valley Division is located at 1770 Iowa Ave, Suite 240, Riverside, CA 92507.

AldiSouthernCalLocations

Jason Hart is ALDI’s CEO in the US.

The grocery space is getting more crowded with Haggen, Google, and Amazon getting into the space.

What does the region mean to ALDI when compared to others who have struggled, namely Fesh & Easy and Famima.  Is the market ripe for another surge?

ALDI is owned and controlled by the Albrecht family in Germany which also owns Monrovia based Trader Joe’s.

ALDI stores are lean run and require approx 20 employees average to run, most of the items are private labeled, and the pay for employees is higher than most stores, running around $13 to as much as $20.

In 2014, ALDI opened 130 stores.  They hope to keep that pace for several years with plans to have opened 650 stores by the end of 2018.  An estimated $3 billion will be invested to pay for land, facilities and equipment.

The first store in expected to open in March 2016, with an expected 25 stores opening before July 2016.

No specific locations are available for the stores, but it is speculated that at least one store will be located in Altadena, CA.  Specifics are here.

What will a typical store look like? Here’s a sample.

Aldi-Stores

We would expect many of the Southern California locations to resemble this design.

According to a June 11, 2015 press release by ALDI put out by Weber ShandWick.

Congress Rejects Mandatory Curfew for Bob Hope Airport

Congress Rejects Mandatory Curfew for Bob Hope Airport

City lauds Congressmen for efforts to limit airport noise

Post Date:06/10/2015 1:31 PM

The U.S. House of Representatives has defeated a proposal that would have allowed a mandatory overnight curfew at the Bob Hope Airport.

Representative Adam Schiff sponsored the amendment to a House Appropriations bill (H.R. 2577) that would have allowed the Bob Hope Airport to bar all flights between 10:00 P.M. to 6:00 A.M. However, the amendment failed 157-266 during a vote Tuesday evening, June 9, 2015.

“Today, Representative Sherman and I tried again to get relief from late night and early morning noise at Bob Hope Airport through a mandatory curfew,” said Rep. Schiff. “Although our amendment was unsuccessful, it enjoyed substantial bipartisan support and demonstrates to the FAA the continuing importance that we and others place on providing meaningful relief to their constituents who live near air traffic. We will keep fighting on behalf of the thousands of San Fernando Valley residents who have long-sought relief from aviation-related noise, and continue to look for opportunities to press this issue.”

“Congressman Schiff and I will continue our efforts on the House floor, with the FAA, and in every other way to secure a reasonable curfew for Bob Hope airport,” added Rep. Brad Sherman, who along with Rep. Schiff, has been fighting for over a decade to get a curfew at Bob Hope Airport.

“While the effort to secure Congressional approval was not successful, the City Council is very appreciative of Congressman Schiff’s ongoing efforts to secure this protection for the Burbank and nearby Los Angeles neighborhoods,” said Burbank Mayor Bob Frutos.  “The City Council remains committed to this course and Rep. Schiff and Rep. Sherman have distinguished themselves again in their hard work to support us.”

The Bob Hope airport currently has a voluntary curfew with commercial airlines that generally prevents flights between 10 P.M. and 7 A.M.; however, it does not apply to cargo flights or private planes.
