Bluehost Sites Down Power Outage

May 25, 2010 Bluehost suffered a major outage.

If you are like me you suffered through the power outage that affected some 6 million websites, yes a large majority of 6, 000,000 sites went dark or unresponsive as Bluehost suffered a prolonged power outage as the city of Provo lost power.

Bluehost claims that sites in Orem where not affected. One of my sites actually stayed up, but was very very slow…

Bluehost power outage, half of their boxes down. They have 2 locations (Provo & Orem) & redundancy in place, long outages hurt any host.

Details are:

The scoop on the #bluehost outage today. Workers disconnected power in the city by mistake. DOH! https://ow.ly/1PTbw

suffered an extended power outage. Their UPS lasted only 45 minutes. It appears that they have no backup generator.

First time I’ve had outage with #bluehost. 2 hours. From blabber, youd think bluehost was crap. 2/8760 in a year.Ill take it at that price.

Does Bluehost have a generator? Most likely not, because if they did the sites would have stayed up.

The fact that their status page showed all the sites where up is of concern. The thing about Bluehost that is troubling is their attitude on many occasions where the make you feel like it is all your fault, why are you bothering them. A bad attitude to take no matter how many websites you have, because as we have seen companies can come crashing down pretty quick with user backlash.

The thing about hosting companies is that they have users over a barrel, if you are looking to transfer your site, start working on it now.

Some options for those of you that need a hosting company:
LiquidWeb has a great power redundancy, support is excellent.

Good thing is that the outage lasted only a short period and things are back up now. But as is always is the case, what did bluehost learn from this? Are they talking about it?

You can read Matt Heaton CEO of Bluehost Blog here which has NO information about the outage.

I have written about this before. Why is there such a lack of communication on the part of a “technology” company. I don’t think bluehost even has a twitter account, they posted nothing about the outage that I am aware of, basically others had to post about the outage on twitter and facebook, blogs, etc..

The day before the power outage, it appears that Matt Heaton’s blog has hacked:
