Beetles in your food?

Yes, you heard right. Food makers are processing beetles for coloring that is being added to things like yogurt and juice.

BrandWeek has a section in back of their magazine called BrandFreak. The story in the 1/12/09 issue.

The female cochineal beetle have not been listed on the ingredients up until now have been listed as colorings, artifical flavor. The beetles are crushed and mixed in. Some people are allergic to these type of ingredients including hives and trouble breathing.

Now after outcries the FDA wants to see all these ingredients listed. So next time you go buy a yogurt there could be beetles listed on the ingredients.

How about some red food color from coal? Yes, some red dyes are derived from coal!

Strange but true.
