Apple iTunes iPhone App Store Problems

So I am trying to resolve a big problem with setting up my iPhone which apparently now requires your Apple ID to be an email, where as before it could be a name. So I go through the who thing, and my password for some reason needs to be changed as well.
Now I can’t seem to purchase anything through the Apple iTunes Store. When I click on it to download, it goes to the sign-in to your iTunes Store account and then goes back to the app page.
So something is very wrong here.
iOS 5 appears to have messed something up, requiring an email address for the Apple ID.
And to top it off, if you try to call someone at Apple, there is nobody you can talk to about your account or purchases. This is a big problem.
The one rep I did speak with said that I have to use the “Express Lane
