Free Mulch For Pasadena Residents Every Month Through October

Free Mulch For Pasadena Residents Every Month Through October

FREE MULCH AVAILABLE THROUGHOUT 2014 TO PASADENA RESIDENTS

PASADENA, Calif.—The City’s 2014 Mulch Give-Away Program provides free, fresh garden mulch to Pasadena residents throughout the year.  The mulch is delivered by the Department of Public Works, www.cityofpasadena.net/PublicWorks, to Victory Park, 2575 Paloma St., southeast corner of the parking lot.  Mulch is available at the park while supplies last, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., beginning Feb. 14.

New loads of mulch will be delivered once per month in 2014 on March 14, April 11, May 9, June 6, July 18, August 1, September 12 and October 10.  Residents should bring shovels, containers, gloves and eye protection to collect the mulch.

The Mulch Give-Away program is a free, environmentally friendly service for residents that uses the recycled trimmings from City street trees.  Mulch is good for your garden and the environment, especially in the current drought conditions.

Mulch can help:

  • Retain valuable moisture, saving both water and money on your utility bill
  • Control soil erosion and slowly break down into beneficial nutrients for the soil
  • Suppress weeds and make your garden more attractive
  • Reduce the City’s carbon footprint by using less landfill space and truck trips to the landfill
  • Increase Pasadena’s solid waste diversion rate.

Bloomberg BusinessWeek, High Speed Traders Rip Off Investors, Lewis says, March 31
Four years after his #1 bestseller The Big Short, MICHAEL LEWIS returns to Wall Street to report on a high-tech predator stalking the equity markets.

Flash Boys is about a small group of Wall Street guys who figure out that the U.S. stock market has been rigged for the benefit of insiders and that, post–financial crisis, the markets have become not more free but less, and more controlled by the big Wall Street banks. Working at different firms, they come to this realization separately; but after they discover one another, the flash boys band together and set out to reform the financial markets. This they do by creating an exchange in which high-frequency trading—source of the most intractable problems—will have no advantage whatsoever.

626 Night Market announces 2014 Events:

5 Weekends, 2 New Locations in LA & OC

ARCADIA, CA (Feb 5, 2014)—626 Night Market, the original and largest Asian themed night market in the US, returns for its 3rd season this summer with two new locations in Downtown Los Angeles and Orange County, in addition to its Santa Anita Park location.  Event dates and information are as follows:

OC Night Market will kick off the 2014 season early this year at the OC Fairgrounds on the weekend of May 9-11, the event’s largest venue to date and the only three-day event this season.  Event hours are 3pm-12am on Friday & Saturday and 3pm-9pm on Sunday.  Admission is $5 and parking will be $7.  Children 6 and under are free.

DTLA Night Market will take place in Lot 7 at L.A. Live & Staples Center on June 20 & 21, with the picturesque downtown skyline as the backdrop.  Event hours are 4pm-12am.  Admission is $7 for presale tickets and $10 at the door.  Children 6 and under are free.  Presale tickets are available now on our website.  Ample parking is available in surrounding lots.  Public transportation is recommended; DTLA Night Market is a short walk from the nearby Pico Station (Metro Blue or Expo Line).

626 Night Market will return at the historic Santa Anita Park for three weekends on July 18 & 19, August 15 & 16, September 12 & 13.  Event hours are 4pm-1am.  Parking will be free with admission of $3.  Children 6 and under are free.

Each event will feature over 200 food, merchandise, crafts, arts, games, music, and entertainment attractions.  626 Night Market will continue to be a platform for showcasing local food entrepreneurs, businesses, artists, musicians, dancers, and filmmakers.  In addition, this year’s events will include handmade crafts, science, and technology attractions to encompass all of the diverse interests of our communities.

626 Night Market’s theme for 2014 is “Dream Big.”  “As a team of dreamers, we hope to unite the community and encourage everyone to dream big with us.  We wish to empower people to use our event as a platform to launch their dreams, whether it be through testing out a business idea as a vendor, performing on our stage, showcasing his/her art, or being a part of one of our community projects,” says Aileen Xu, spokesperson of the 626 Night Market.  626 Night Market will be continuing its community projects such as the “World’s Largest Cup of Boba Tea,” Short Film Contest, and Screenwriting Contest, as well as introducing new “Dream Big” special projects to be announced later this year.

626 Night Market is now accepting vendor and performance artists applications.  Lower vendor rates start at $98 per day.  Top vendors gross over $10,000 per event.  Last year’s attendance averaged over 50,000 per event.

Meet Bill Wathen, co-owner and Winemaker of Foxen Winery.  Bill will be pouring Foxen’s

  • 2011 Cuvee Jeanne Marie. Wine Advocate- 91 Points
Looking at their Rhone blends, the 2011 Cuvée Jeanne Marie is a blend of 78% Grenache and 22% Mourvedre that spends 16 months in 2-3 year-old-barrels. Coming from high-density planting and clay soils, it offers up a lush, sexy profile with kirsch, licorice, toasted spice and leather flowing to a medium-bodied, sweetly fruited palate. Seamless, balanced and straight-up delicious, it should have a minimum of 4-5 years of prime drinking.

Meet Dr. Bob Baehner, owner of Baehner Fournier.  Bob will be pouring:

  • The celebrated “V3” Blend

This bottling represents the third release of our Gold Medal award winning “V3″ Blend, and we feel it may be our best yet. Grown entirely on the steep hillsides of our estate vineyards in the Eastern Santa Ynez Valley, this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot offers the vineyard’s signature flavors and aromas of cherry, cassis, rose petals and sweet spices. Bold and complex on the palate, the wine will continue to age and develop further complexity in the bottle for many years. 248 cases produced.

Meet Alta Maria Winery Alta Maria Winery will be pouring:

  • 2012 Chardonnay ~ Bien Nacido Vineyard 100% Neutral Oak Fermented Aged

This Bien Nacido Chardonnay bottling comes from the original and most sought after blocks on the ranch from vines that were planted in 1973.

Meet Dragonette Cellars Dragonette will be pouring:

  • 2012 Pinot Noir “Radian Vineyard”

Radian is a new and exceptionally promising vineyard at the very western edge of the Sta. Rita Hills. We selected our blocks from the most extreme portions at the very top of the vineyard.  Our blocks are therefore at high elevation on steep, north facing slopes, and planted in almost pure diatomaceous earth. Our blocks are regularly buffeted by high winds and/or covered in fog, which severely limits yields to under 1 ton per acre.  The wines are unique, highly concentrated red fruits, but with great acidity, an intense mineral streak, and complexity from earth and fresh herb notes.  The 2011 vintage of this wine received 92 points from Josh Raynolds in Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar.

Appellation: Sta. Rita Hills

Vineyard Sources: 100% Radian Vineyard

Case Production: 200
