MILK: History, Politics, and Nutrition – Class Education

Class/Education

The story below, from today’s LA Times front page, provides some context for this upcoming event.

https://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-raw-food-raid-20100725,0,7940288,full.story

In addition to talking about the health and safety of raw milk, Mark McAfee will talk about sustainable dairy farming practices and how they differ from the standard practices used in dairies today, even those whose labels say “organic.” I will be posting a series of related articles on the Altadena Heritage facebook page between now and the event on August 28, so if you’d like more information, check there.

One of our Volunteers for Ripe Classes, Gloria Putnam, has been busy!

She has arranged with Organic Pastures founder and CEO Mark McAfee to speak in Altadena as part of his campaign to “share the secret” of raw milk.

MILK: History, Politics, and Nutrition

Michele Zack, local historian and author of Altadena: Between Wilderness and City, will give a brief overview of Altadena’s milk-producing past. Mark McAfee will explain how our industrialized food chain and the supporting regulation systems limit access to fresh raw milk and why access to this nutritious living food is worth fighting for.

This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served, and Organic Pastures raw milk will be available for tasting.

LA Street Food Festival 2010 Rose Bowl Pictures

If you were fortunate enough to attend the LA Street Food Festival at the Rose Bowl yesterday you probably had a great time, we know there are a few people that have some complaints, but for organizers they should rest and know that almost everyone had a great time!

Everyone was friendly, even media people, I had chat with Bryan Day with the Pasadena Star News. He was having a great time.

Here’s a video:

I loved the samples and the friendliness of the staff. Here’s the winners of the voting. In my book all of food vendors worked so.

Deadly Syndrome and Warpaint performed music after a long set by the DJ.

I had a chance to try about 15-20 stands. All of them unique and the staff at the booth very friendly. This is a must attend event in Los Angeles. Who said LA was #2 for street food?

LA is #1 for street food!!!

LA Street Food Festival Only Hours Away

The Street Food Festival is less than a few hours away. Last night I was by the Rose Bowl for the Green Expo and went up to the second floor to get a view of the field, it was pretty amazing, looking down at the field with all the tents of all the food trucks that will be present.

This seems to be a much better program tents and a music stage, I can only imagine the chaos and super long lines of people waiting to get to the food.

There will be lots of drinks as well.

Remember the Rose Bowl is designed to hold approx 100,000 at capacity. Remember the U2 Concert last year, it was sold out.  Organizers of the Street Food Festival expect 5,000, although I have heard some other numbers of 20,000, not sure where those came from.

More updates and tweets will be coming to you live from the Rose Bowl, as it appears there is good ATT 3G coverage.

I’ll update this post with various pieces of info before, during, and after the show.

Remember to post pictures in the Flickr Pool.

Kapitall Launches Live Trading Via Leading Online Brokerage

You knew this was going to happen. With the stellar team assembled at Kapitall this was only a matter of time. This agreement with TDAmerica marks a new era in online trading intelligence.

Congrats to all the folks that made this happen.

Groundbreaking Investing Site Allows Clients of a Top Online Broker to Import Portfolios, Analyze Holdings, and Trade Stocks & ETFs Live

New York, NY, July 22, 2010 KAPITALL, the leading investing website for the Facebook generation, announced the launch of live stock trading via one of America’s top online brokers. In a first-of-its-kind partnership, clients of this leading brokerage firm will now be able to trade their stock portfolios directly from KAPITALL’s website. And current users of KAPITALL’s innovative investing tools will now have the choice to execute live trades.

Starting today, a KAPITALL user can import an existing portfolio or open a new brokerage account with KAPITALL’s partner. The user gains access to KAPITALL’s full suite of innovative investing tools to track their portfolio’s performance, analyze their holdings, and trade stocks and ETFs directly from KAPITALL. Every trade on KAPITALL will be automatically synched with their brokerage account.

“At KAPITALL, we are leading the future of online investing for the next generation of investors. With the launch of this strategic partnership, KAPITALL’s users can now advance beyond our Practice Portfolios to begin live trading,” said CEO Gaspard de Dreuzy. “Clients of our partner are also invited to engage and collaborate in KAPITALL’s vibrant investing community.”

This unique partnership mirrors a larger trend of internet users networking across websites. Rather than remain isolated within a single investing site, the clients of KAPITALL’s partner can fully participate in KAPITALL’s community with the added benefit of full trading functionality. For KAPITALL’s users, the access to live stock trading enhances the distinctive KAPITALL user experience.

Did you print your tickets?
Don’t forget to print and bring your ticket! Every ticket has a unique barcode that will be scanned and cannot be duplicated. Without your printed ticket, you won’t be able to get in. If you purchased tickets for a group and sent the PDF to everyone to print, make sure each person in your group is assigned a different ticket so the codes are not duplicated. *If you have not received your tickets via email you may have mis-typed your email address when purchasing the tickets, we’ve included a print link in this message for you. If you have any issues please call Eventbrite at 1-877-297-6805 6am-6pm PT.

VIP Parking and Admission
VIP admission begins at 4pm through Gate A and will end at 5pm. Please have your VIP ticket on-hand to get into the VIP Parking Lot F (seen here on the color map on the website).

General Admission and Parking
GA begins at 5:30pm through Gate A. The parking lots surrounding the Rose Bowl are meant for 90,000 spectators — with just 5000 attendees to tomorrow’s Food Fest, there will be plenty of parking (seen here on the color map on the website). Lots K and I are what we recommend. 🙂

What to Bring
Picnic blankets for the field and cushions for the stadium seating are allowed. Bring a reuasable water bottle if you like (we’ve got fountains!) but with so many cold, refreshing beverages (like Honest Tea, IZZE, Bonadea Aguas Frescas, Dry Soda, Function, POM and Don Francisco Coffee), we doubt you’ll need it, or want to carry it around. Wear flats (ladies, you’ll be walking on grass!), come hungry and pack a picnic blanket to throw down on the field or in the stands to soak up some summer sun.

What Not to Bring?
Outside containers will not be allowed in the stadium. Due to health regulations, dogs are not allowed. Sorry, Fido. No chairs, strollers, or anything else that may cut or harm the grass are allowed on the field. Because strollers are not allowed on the field we’ll have a stroller corral in the entrance area for those of you with little ones in tow.

Cameras
Cameras are welcome! If you take photos, please be sure to post them to our Flickr Pool!
