Hollywood Farmers Market – Update April 22, 2011

I love a good farmers market, and the Hollywood Market is one of the best in the country. Lots of variety of farmers and products from all over the Southern California area.

At a meeting convened by Council President Garcetti on April 18th, the Hollywood Farmers’ Market was again granted a limited extension (30-day permit valid until May 17th) to continue to operate in its current location. This will allow SEE-LA a bit more time to negotiate with LA Film School and to continue to research the best potential alternatives for the Market. To further recap how things stand:

  • The LA Film School’s position remains unchanged in their demand that the market footprint be modified and that Ivar Ave., south of Selma, be vacated on Sunday during market hours – 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
  • SEE-LA will work with the hired architect to study in greater depth alternative locations, by assessing all relocation and recurring costs, other impacts on the local community and on major traffic routes, on the market overall, unforeseen risks/losses and the time requirements to complete this process.
  • SEE-LA stands committed to protecting community access to locally-grown fresh produce and enjoyment of the market, the livelihood of the farmers and local vendors and to maintaining a safe and viable market, fully accessible to all.

Selma Ivar As we continue to address this pressing issue, we would like to thank all of our loyal friends and supporters for their dedication and advocacy. We are very grateful for your continued efforts in communicating to the City Council and to others the importance of keeping the market as is, the significance of SEE-LA’s services to the city’s under served population, and for advocating changes in city laws to ensure the long-term existence of farmers’ markets in public locations, where they are readily accessible and can provide healthy, sustainably produced food for their customers. We also greatly appreciate the Councilman’s commitment to keeping the Hollywood Farmers’ Market thriving in Hollywood with the market’s anchor at the Selma / Ivar intersection. We thank him for standing by our side.

    A few dates to remember:
