Googlemail is now gmail in the UK

Are you a british and every time anybody mails you on your email address as provided by google, till now, they are typing the long string @googlemail.com. Does that not make them miffed when one has to type it everytime 😛

When you apply a Google email account from the UK now, you get a @googlemail.com address instead of @gmail.com. Google today announed the good news which is going to end this now. According to the announcement on the Google mail blog, Google Mail is soon becoming Gmail again in the UK.

Now, to change your email address to @gmail.com, you have to take care of the following:

If you already have a Google email account in the UK, you’ll soon have the option to switch your existing @googlemail.com address to the matching @gmail.com one, but you’re also free to stick with @googlemail.com. And starting later this week, anybody who signs up for a new account in the UK will get an @gmail.com address. Since “gmail” is 50% fewer characters than “googlemail,” Google estimates that this name change will prove to be a energy save. How? I will tell you.

This change of name will save approximately 60 million keystrokes a day. At about 217 microjoules per keystroke, that’s about the energy of 20 bonbons saved every day! So, you too save energy for the world and change the name 🙂

This transition is likely to be done over the next week, and we will update you as the changes are made by Gmail. So everybody in the UK, welcome to Gmail!
