Apple iPhone App Tethering $4.99 – iRandomizer Numbers

Have you read about the iRandomizer Numbers App that apparently has tethering capabilities, An app that slipped past the folks at Apple.

Sad but I think Josh is right, have we been duped? I can’t get it to work, looks like a fake screen and there’s never a AP that shows up.

When you download the app, which is $4.99, simply enter “1984″ in as the minimum number and “31337″ as the maximum number. Tap generate, and boom you’re able to tether any machine to your iPhone and use its 3G connection.

The CEO of the company behind the app, Nick Kramer, told InformationWeek that this feature was originally meant for friends and family:

Reluctantly, I will admit that my application ‘iRandomizer Numbers’ does have a hidden tethering feature. I say reluctantly because I didn’t plan on the feature being released. I designed the tethering functionality for my family and close friends not thinking it would be disseminated outside that circle.

Try at your own risk here’s the link. Apparently the app is now no longer available in the US.

So how to setup:
1. Make an Adhoc network on your PC
2. Join on your iPhone and set a static IP to 13.37.13.37 with the Subnet mask to 255.255.255.0
3. Now edit the settings on your PC to match – check SOCKS proxy and add 13.37.13.37 with 2000 as the port
4. Now click Apply

It works, but like all proxy tethering apps, it’s hard to set up as it requires an ad-hoc connection, unlike tethering built in it iOS which basically works as a wireless access point. Also since it uses SOCKS, local DNS resolution won’t work. See my post below for steps.
