LitFest Pasadena on the Prowl Saturday, May 17, 2014

Come on down! We’re really excited about LitFest on the Prowl next Saturday, May 17 from 5 to 10 p.m. in Pasadena’s Playhouse District, the third annual iteration of LitFest Pasadena. It’s a five-hour prowl through three venues within three blocks. It’s free.

We kick off at 5 p.m. in the Vroman’s courtyard, 695 E. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena to celebrate legendary food writer Ruth Reichl’s first novel, “Delicious!,” set in the New York food world. Pasadenan Laurie Ochoa, Ruth’s former managing editor at Gourmet magazine, will interview her on stage.

5-6: Creative director Larry Wilson welcomes the crowd to LifFest on the Prowl and introduces Ruth. Laurie and Ruth talk about her book and the state of food writing today. Questions from the crowd at 5.45; book signing at 6.

Wine by Old Pasadena’s Everson Royce; bites from Robert Simon’s Bistro 45 in honor of Ruth, who gave the first big review to Cafe Jacoulet in Old Pasadena in the mid-1980s.

6-8: Readings and literary conversations in the Pasadena Playhouse block of El Molino Avenue, including the playhouse itself and Little Junebugs, Monopole Wine and Zona Rosa

8-10: Food and drinks from El Portal restaurant and more readings and events in the Arcade Lane on Colorado across the street from Vroman’s.

L.A. Noir, poetry, literary fiction and theater are among the genres celebrated. mona simpson, michelle huneven, steph cha, desiree zamorano, jervey tervalon, brendan constantine, ron koertge and denise hamilton are among confirmed authors, along with the star and playwright of “letters from zora,” vanessa bell calloway and gabrielle denise pina.

Sarah E. Reisman – From Nature to the Pharmacy: The Chemistry Behind Modern Medicines

Sarah E. Reisman – From Nature to the Pharmacy: The Chemistry Behind Modern Medicines

Wednesday, May 7, 2014
8:00 pm
Beckman Auditorium

The origins of many modern drugs are small, organic molecules (known as “natural products”), compounds that are isolated from bacteria, fungi, plants and other natural sources. Although some natural products are isolated and used without modification – think penicillin! – others require careful reengineering in order to be suitable medicines. Key to this endeavor is organic chemistry, and understanding how to build molecules atom by atom with precise positional and spatial control. This lecture will describe our research on the chemistry of natural products, building from an atomistic description of molecular structure to a description of chemical discovery and synthesis.
