Warning! Scam call re: SCE electricity rate subsidy

Warning! Scam call re: SCE electricity rate subsidy… Has this happened to you?

Tuesday 6/17 received a call from

It sounded at first like the caller was from Southern California Edison. The caller confirmed our address and referred to a notice from SCE that we had received recently, regarding a rate increase.

My husband, assuming he was talking with an Edison representative, pointed out that the only notice we had received recently was regarding a plan for SCE to underground power to our houses; however, that notice had been correctly addressed to us , but contained a project map incorrectly

The male voice then asked if our SCE bill was “more than $130 a month,” and explained that he was from an (obscure sounding) organization that had an arrangement with L. A. County to provide assistance, reducing electric bills by as much as 75%.

He said his organization was listed at the end of our electric bills.

Pulled one of our SCE bills out and checked for any organizational listing while the man remained on the line. There was no such organization listed. The caller then stated they would send a person to our house “to look at your electric bill,” at which point my husband concluded this was a scam.

He had no reason to discuss anything further about what this person was proposing, and politely hung up. Be wary if you receive a similar call. You may want to report it to SCE and the FTC, per the SCE Scam website: “If you think you’ve received a spoof or scam phone call, you can report the details related to the call by filling out our [SCE] online fraud form or sending an email to csinfogov@sce.com . You can also report the scam to the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov .” https://www.sce.com/outages-safety/safety-resources-support/support-during-emergencies/scam-awareness
