Tutti Frutti Farms — Organic since 1988
To bring good, healthy food to people without charging exorbitant prices; promote organic farming practices; educate children about farming, produce and nutrition
In 1988, fifth generation farmer Chris Cadwell took over his family’s remaining undeveloped fourteen acres of hillside property overlooking the Pacific Ocean’s Channel Islands in Carpinteria, California.
Since 1850, no Cadwell had had a desire to work the steep piece of property until Chris, his wife Cornelia, and their five children began cultivating it and planted fruit trees. They decided on the farm’s name, “Tutti Frutti”, Italian for “All Fruits”, and soon branched out into growing organic produce for the coastal communities of Southern California. In 1990, they moved family and farm to Santa Rosa Road, to a piece of land on the Santa Ynez River, between Buellton and Lompoc.
Now on more than 200 acres in Northern Santa Barbara County, plus the original fourteen acres in Carpinteria, Tutti Frutti Farms grows organic produce, from a variety of tomatoes and peppers to cool weather crops, like artichokes, peas and greens. They market their produce through California Farmers Markets and select nationwide organic specialty distributors.
As one of the few remaining vegetable growers in an area now better known for its pinot grapes, Chris attributes his location on the Santa Ynez River to his success. Far from polluting highways, the farm is surrounded by wilderness guaranteeing a wealth of natural predatory insects. Fifteen miles inland from the Pacific coast, a coastal breeze minimizes mildew while evening fog slows the ripening process, a truly natural flavor enhancer! Chris religiously plants cover crops, like vetch and clover, to keep his soil healthy and mineral rich. And the natural rhythms of the his unique micro climate offer additional defense against pests and weeds.
