The Green Marathon – 2010 Los Angeles Marathon
As a certified member of the Council for Responsible Sport, the Honda LA Marathon presented by K-Swiss is committed to bringing you a more sustainable marathon. Green your running habits with us!

What does a more sustainable marathon look like? It means considering our race’s impact on the environment, creating partnerships with green companies and offering more sustainable options for our participants.

1 Eco-volunteer team. We’re calling on all volunteers with green in their heart to help us out with our efforts this year. The Eco-volunteer team will be recycling station ambassadors, water station material recycling gurus as well as D-tag/Heatsheet collectors. Interested in lending a hand? Click here.

2 Ridesharing. We can’t wait to hear about all the new neighborhood friends you met through our carpooling program! Sign up to share your empty seats on the way to the expo and the marathon. You’ll find some running buddies and keep extra cars off the road.

3 Heatsheets. When you’re done warming your body and you’re ready to head toward the Finish Line Festival look for the heat sheet recycling stations. Our Heatsheets are #4 (LDPE) plastic so we’ll be collecting them for proper disposal.

4 Even our toilets are getting greener! Along the race and at the Start and Finish the portable toilets will have biodegradable hand soap, recycled paper products and eco-friendly deodorizer.

5 Great recycling signage at the start and finish line. We want you to know where your plastic water bottles and other recyclables are supposed to go! Just look up – in any direction you should have a recycling option. Drop your recyclable in and you’ve helped green the marathon!

6 Stop by the Green Zone at the LA Marathon Expo. We’ve searched high and low to bring you the best and the brightest in green vendors! It’s great to support other companies in the community reaching toward sustainability like the Honda LA Marathon presented by K-Swiss.

7 MRF. MRF stands for Materials Recycling Facility and that’s where our trash is going. Trash collected at the Honda LA Marathon presented by K-Swiss start and Finish line areas will be filtered by a MRF to recover any valuable recyclable materials that may have ended up in the wrong bin. This way we’ll know that our trash is really just trash.

8 What fuels the Honda LA Marathon presented by K-Swiss? Biodiesel! Some of the generators on the new course and at the start and finish areas will run on Biodiesel, a cleaner-burning renewable fuel.

9 Using our water more efficiently. Did you know the average runner sips 5 oz. of water per water station on a course? We’ll have 5oz. waiting for you in each cup this year instead of 8, saving precious drinking resources and making it easier for you to avoid high-speed cup swiping spillage. Feel free to grab two if you need!

10 Partnering with Heal the Bay. We can’t get enough of Heal the Bay around here. The non-profit environmental organization that works to protect Southern California’s coastal waters will be back for another great year of raising awareness and hands on participation with the Honda LA Marathon presented by K-Swiss.
