Project_210 presents RUTH TROTTER: Preludes to Painting, an exhibition of acrylic ink drawings on paper. Trotter’s investigation into the history of early and mid-20th Century painting, particularly Surrealism and Abstract Expression, provide fuel for her newest body of work. While these earlier avant-garde painters turned to the subconscious, having been influenced by developments in the field of psychology, namely Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, their work today can ironically seem antiquated, lacking the autonomy and vision they once had. Trotter gets into the space of these former paintings, such as Motherwell’s Elegies to the Spanish Republic, creating carefully articulated systems of pattern and repetition based on his chance-driven, intuitive works. Trotter manages to perfectly marry the sensibilities of our present day digital age with the spirit of Modernism, creating works that are as rich formally as they are conceptually.

Ruth Trotter is a Los Angeles – based artist. Since 1989, she has held the position of Professor of Art at the University of La Verne and has served as a curator, panelist and advisor within the Los Angeles art community. Ruth Trotter received an MFA from Claremont Graduate University and a BA from Scripps College.
