Pasadena Pro Musica performs this Sunday: Magnificent Motets II

Pasadena Pro Musica continues its journey through four centuries of the choral motet repertory, sung in three languages. The concert will feature the full choir performing an extraordinary Latin setting of  two verses from the Song of Songs (“I sleep, and my heart is awake/You have ravished my heart”) by Renaissance master Heinrich Schuetz, a work for double choir by J.S. Bach (“The spirit comes to help our weakness”) that is both grand and ardently expressive, and one of Brahms’ most exquisite works for voices, “Create in me a pure heart, O God.”  A small choir will lend an intimate sound to Brahms’ Marienlieder — seven German folk texts about the Virgin  Mary — which will provide a lush counterpoint to the lovely simplicity of Five Marian Songs by the contemporary Polish composer Henryk Gorecki, sung in the original Polish.
