Looking for a fix to the Outlook IMAP Desktop Alert Notification not working?
plugin that displays the notification icon, even for IMAP accounts.

Looks like Microsoft released a hotfix that finally addresses this issue:
https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2516474/en-us
Seems to work for me, emails coming into the default inbox folder of my IMAP accounts will now cause Outlook 2010 to display the new mail envelope icon as well as play a sound.
One caveat is that new emails that are set up to go into other non-Inbox folders, outside of Outlook, will download fine in Outlook but won’t display the new mail envelope icon. (e.g. using GMail’s filters to move incoming emails from the Inbox to another folder) But I think older versions of Outlook had the same behavior so this isn’t surprising.
Office 2010 Service Pack 1 seems finally to have fixed this issue.
Without any addon scripts, rules or programs, the taskbar icon for Outlook changes when new IMAP mail is received.
Have you all installed the service pack? It should have the hotfix mentioned by Lars above and located here: https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2516474/en-us
initially fixed with that hotfix. The hotfix is now part of Office 2010 Service Pack 1 so installing service pack 1 fixes the problem.
Try this out:
1. Open Outlook 2010 and click the ‘Home’ Tab at the top
2. Click on the ‘Rules’ icon then ‘Manage Rules & Alerts’
3. Click the ‘New Rule’ Tab then (Start from blank rule – Apply rule on messages I receive) and click ‘Next’
4. Tick the box that says ‘through the specified account’ in STEP 1 and then click in the underlined specified and choose your account in STEP 2. Click ‘next’
5. On this page tick ‘display a desktop alert’ and ‘play a sound’ in STEP 2 click the underlined play a sound
(the ‘notify’ sound should be fine in the list, select it and click on ‘Open’)
6. Finally click ‘Finish’ then ‘Apply’ then ‘OK’ (Send yourself a test email to check the rule is working)
