If this would have happened to me I would have asked to speak with a regional manager and escalated the issue. This is unacceptable. On the other hand, a grocery store or any merchant for that matter is not obligated to accept credit cards, although by having the signs up that they do accept implies that they do accept cards under most conditions.
Paul should contact the corporate offices of Stater Bros and express to them how dissatisfied he was with the way his situation was handled. I would bet that Stater Bros would make amends and try to make things right.
