Does the AT&T Microcell really improve service coverage for the iPhone?

We are receiving reports that the iPhone 4 is not compatible, we are also reading online reports that even the 3GS has troubles. We are not sure if these problems are related to the Microcell and the configuration.

There are also reports from users of garbled skipping audio, Phone 4 skipping audio on AT&T microcell.
