From the perspective of the communications industry, the growing worldwide adoption of twitter in 2009 by various segments of society in the 21st century may be as big as the invention and introduction of the telegraph in the 19th century. At least it feels like this to me.
One thing which has become clear to me during the past few months is the amount of change the worldwide adoption of twitter is having on an ever increasing number of diverse divisions of society – from Iranian Politics to Public Safety to Public Diplomacy to the Advertising, Media and Entertainment industries.
Something BIG is happening and change is in the air.
Just like how the introduction of the telegraph helped shape the future of communications, I believe the worldwide adoption of twitter is ushering in an era which the real-time Internet will play a major role which is still being defined. 500 years post-Columbus the world is once again flat and access to information is becoming democratized regardless of the time and distance from the location of where the information was first reported.
Until recently we went to websites like Google and asked a question. These days when one person and then 10 people and then 100 people go to places like twitter and make a statement, the collective voice can start to be heard.
