Willdan Energy Solutions recently moved to a new location at 101 East Huntington Drive.

According to reports Willdan Energy Solutions has experienced over 300 percent growth in employees since September 2010, after first having been located in the Monrovia area since 2007.

Tony J. Coonce(director of operations at Willdan Energy Solutions) has spent the past year tripling his work force.

The company works with cities and businesses to save on energy consumption at no cost to them.

According to a story in the Pasadena Star News:
Willdan Energy Solutions manages several energy efficiency programs for Southern California Edison, all aimed at reducing the number of kilowatts used by business customers. Edison and other utilities foot the bill through the California Public Utilities Commission.

Coonce was hired away from Southern California Edison and grew his staff to 29 in order keep up with increased productivity.

“At some point I had hired so many people that I had to give up my office for work space, ” Coonce recalled. “I was working from home and cafes, just sort of like a ghost – in and out.”

Coonce said the company has a number of projects in the works for 2011 and he plans to hire more people early next year.

The company handles programs in cities all over Southern California. Willdan also does a lot of work with small businesses, Coonce added.

“Utilities contract with us to identify energy savings opportunities in businesses,” he noted. “We specialize in hotels and hospitals. A new sector that we are starting to work with is data-storage centers.”

The programs are funded by fees collected by utilities in the Public Purpose Programs charge. Utility companies receive government incentives for reducing their overall energy footprint.

“The projects all relate to a reduction in emissions and the need to avoid the construction of power plants as well as reducing the carbon footprint of businesses,” said James Mendoza, Willdan’s account manager.

The company was started in 2004 by Ashish Goel and Jay Bhalla as Intergy Corp. in Northern California. A year after Intergy opened its Southland operations in Monrovia, it was acquired by Willdan Group Inc. and now is a division of the Willdan Group, functioning as Willdan Energy Solutions.

Willdan averages 40 million kilowatts of savings annually for its customers. This equals 40.8 million pounds of carbon emissions reduced, or on average 20,400 tons of carbon emissions reduced each year, Mendoza added.

The company works closely with the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments, comprised of 29 valley cities and administers the Energy Wise Partnership, an agreement between the COG and Edison to reduce the cities’ energy consumption.

Early this month, a number of Willdan projects with San Gabriel cities were awarded by Edison, noted Rosie Kang, a Willdan program manager. In 2010, Willdan projects with COG cities totaled more than 870,000 kilowatt-hours in energy savings.

Projects with the cities of South Pasadena, West Covina, Pomona and San Gabriel all were honored for their efforts to reduce energy consumption.

Kang said the company is already gearing up for 2011.

“We are meeting with all 29 cities to reintroduce the partnership and see what other opportunities are available,” she said.
