Unlocked Apple iPhones: Apple today began selling “unlocked” models of its iPhone 4.
The first time allowing U.S. customers to buy the smartphone without committing to a two-year contract with a wireless carrier.
The unlocked iPhones,
$649 for 16GB of memory
$749 for 32GB of memory
The equivalent iPhone 4 models sold with Verizon Wireless or AT&T contracts cost $199 and $299.
Companies typically subsidize phones, then make the money back as subscribers pay monthly service fees.
Apple says the unlocked phones can be used “on the supported GSM cellular network of your choice,” including AT&T and numerous overseas carriers. Buyers must supply their own micro-SIM card.
More details on this developing story and how Apple has joined numerous other manufactures in being carrier agnostic.
iPhone 4 – Unlocked (GSM) – 16GB Black
Get all the features of iPhone 4 — FaceTime video calling, Retina display, HD video recording, and more — in a phone that you can activate and use on the supported GSM wireless carrier of your choice, such as AT&T in the United States.1
If you don’t want a multiyear service contract or if you prefer to use a local carrier when traveling abroad, the unlocked iPhone 4 is the best choice. It arrives without a micro-SIM card, so you’ll need an active micro-SIM card from any supported GSM carrier worldwide.
How the unlocked iPhone 4 works
The unlocked iPhone 4 requires an active micro-SIM card that you obtain from a supported GSM wireless carrier. Simply insert the micro-SIM card into the slot on your iPhone, connect to your Mac or PC using the USB cable, and launch iTunes on your computer to complete the setup.
