§ 42.9 million gallons of gasoline per day are consumed by
California motorists. Motor vehicles are responsible for more
than half of all smog-forming emissions.
§ An estimated 6,200 people die prematurely each year in
Southern California from the impacts of air pollution.
§ According to one study conducted in Mexico City, dogs
exposed to high levels of air pollution experienced lung and
upper respiratory ailments as well as damage to their brain cell
genes.
§ A USC study, which tracked 3,600 children for 13 years, found
that those who lived within 500 meters of a freeway since age
10 had substantial deficits in lung function by the age of 18
years, compared to children living at least 1,500 meters away.
§ Air pollution is responsible for 2,400 hospitalizations and
980,000 lost work days annually in the South Coast Basin.
§ 140,000 children have asthma and respiratory diseases in the
South Coast Basin.
§ Over 80-percent of emissions are caused by mobile sources
(i.e., ships, trains, trucks, and construction equipment).
§ 70-percent of airborne cancer risks in Southern California is
directly attributed to diesel engines in the South Coast Basin.
