News: Hurricane Irene Impact on Airline Travel in United States

Category 2 – outer bands , large system , will affect the Northeast throughout the weekend.

Hurricane Irene is forecast to have a substantial impact on the Northeastern United States including the Washington DC and New York City areas. The hurricane is expected to bring hurricane-force winds to the Carolinas, DC, New York, and New England. Travelers should expect that thousands of flights will be cancelled in and out of the affected areas beginning this weekend and continuing through early next week.

JetBlue is the first carrier to begin canceling a significant amount of flights; JetBlue cancelled most flights to/from JFK and Boston on Saturday evening or Sunday — 434 cancellations in all.

Other airlines are holding off except most are canceling flights on Saturday evening to/from the Carolinas and Southern Virginia including Norfolk, Charlotte, Williamsburg, Myrtle Beach, Wilmington, etc.
