LightSail: The Countdown Begins!

Wednesday, July 9th 7:00pm-8:30pm: Crawford Family Forum

Solar sailing has been called the only practical way to reach the stars. But driving spacecraft across the solar system with the pressure of sunlight also offers advantages over traditional rocket engines. The Planetary Society returns with an evening devoted to the revolutionary potential of solar sailing.

LightSail will spread its silver wings once it reaches orbit, becoming visible to nearly everyone on Earth. Host Mat Kaplan of Planetary Radio and NEXT: People|Science|Tomorrow will be joined by Planetary Society CEO Bill Nye the Science Guy. The evening will climax with an exciting announcement about how LightSail will begin its journey. RSVP to this free event!

Nikola Tesla – mad scientist or genius inventor?

Sunday, July 20th 1:00pm-2:30pm: Crawford Family Forum

Madman, genius, innovator – however you describe Nikola Tesla, he was one of the 20th century’s greatest scientific minds. Many of our modern technologies were born from ideas Tesla dreamed up in his lab.

This year is the 158th anniversary of Nikola Tesla’s birth, and KPCC’s Sanden Totten will honor him by throwing the eccentric genius a party — complete with a working Tesla coil. Yes, we’re firing it up! It’s a chance for kids and curious adults to learn about the man and his work — and see science in action. RSVP to this free event!
