Just started to encounter this error:
A DVD-R UJ-85J drive failed. The device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media.

Apparently the error can be a sign that the superdrive is bad, the drive is dirty, or the media is bad.

You can try to replace the media. Right now I am using Office Depot branded and it’s not the best, so I will try to replace it with a name brand like Sony, TDK, etc…

You can use a DVD/CD cleaner kit to perhaps remove any dust particles that might be blocking the laser from burning the media.

If this fails, the best bet is to get the superdrive surviced and repaired/replaced if necessary. Hopefully your machine is covered uner the AppleCare warranty service.
