Don’t Miss Out on These Fun Activities

Sunday, October 7th is packed with fabulous activities all along the route. And the best part – they’re free! Here is a comprehensive listing, hub by hub. (Click here to see the 10.7.12 route map).

EXPO PARK HUB
Expo Park’s California African American Museum is going all out with a full program of music and dance on a special Target Sunday. Joining their regular co-host Jeffrey Anderson-Gunter is vocalist Harlem Lee. The entertainment line-up is plentiful, with inspired bands, dancers, and hip-hop artists. See the full program here. The museum galleries are open (free admission!) at 11:00am and the program begins at 1:00pm. How can you resist?

Next stop: The Natural History Museum! You can only visit this site if you’re really rad – we mean RAAD – code for Reptile & Amphibian Appreciation Day! Starting as early as 9:30am, you can explore fun and engaging science activities and learn from reptile and amphibian specialists.  Come on over to meet live animals from around the world and immerse yourself in scaly, slimy fun.

And who can resist a visit to the West Coast’s largest hands-on science center? Now that the California Science Center is host to the Space Shuttle Endeavour, it’s likely you’ll want to visit. Make sure to plan accordingly and purchase tickets in advance.

Don’t forget to visit the CicLAvia Expo Park Hub, which is partnering with Building Healthy Communities South Los Angeles. Here, you can visit a wide array of wonderful community booths, watch healthful food demonstrations and participate in giveaways, a community mapping exercise to highlight important spots in South LA, live Zumba classes and more!

GRAND PARK HUB
As you make your way to the Grand Park Hub, fall in love with LA’s newest twelve-acre park! Here, you can enjoy live DJs and the always-fun Ozokids, or participate in Drum Downtown. Just make sure to bring your dancing shoes! For a full performance schedule, click here. This is the hub where you can visit Bike Nation to rent a bike free of charge (rentals are for 90 minutes). But make sure to reserve your bike in advance.

CHINATOWN HUB
Bike or no bike, you can easily walk over to another new addition to CicLavia —  Chinatown! Thank you to our friends at the Chinatown Business Improvement District for helping us create such a fun-filled hub! Catch some great bands at the Live Music Stage and enjoy a cold beer at the Craft Beer Garden, curated by Eagle Rock Brewery. While you’re there, head over to the Far East Plaza to check out the life-size chess game. And don’t forget to play Ping Pong! Think you’re a hot player? Test your skills against someone who is nationally ranked. For a full program of events, click here.  And there’s more! While in Chinatown, check out Living Streets LA to witness a vision of what life can be like without cars. Come see for yourself and enjoy workshops, public art, and imaginative games.

MACARTHUR PARK HUB
MacArthur Park is once again hosting a hub at CicLAvia. Our faithful long-time sponsor REI is presenting fun and engaging activities for the whole family. Climb the free-standing rock wall, or take a make-believe adventure in their photo-booth. Take your shoes off and climb inside the Merrill running wheel and sprint like there’s no tomorrow. Now that you’ve exhausted yourself, enjoy a free outdoor performance of Great Leap’s Cycle of Change. Performances are at 11:00am, 12:30pm, and 2:00pm, with a special performance by Quetzal at 1:30pm! Top off your visit with a snack from another sponsor, Small Planet Foods. Sample new flavors from Larabar, Cascadian Farm and Food Should Taste Good.

MARIACHI PLAZA HUB
Round out your day at the vibrant Mariachi Plaza. Don’t miss the Farmers Market – pick up some fresh veggies for a delicious post-CicLAvia dinner. Then visit Libros Schmibros, the fantastic lending library and bookshop. Finally, enjoy mariachi musicians who will entertain you in their elegant charro suits, bringing you back to a time that celebrates the historic and living heritage of Boyle Heights. And if you want to hop on two-wheels after taking in the excitement of the Plaza, stroll on over to Bike Nation’s second rental location (these 90-minute rentals are free of charge, but don’t forget to reserve in advance!).

We hope that this full day of programming will deepen your CicLavia experience.
See you on the route!
