Olive Harvest Event Schedule
Friday, November 5, 2010
8:00 AM-2:30 PM – Registration
Registration will take place in the Ricketts-Fleming Courtyard (on Olive Walk near the cannon).
Harvesting
Harvesters will be assigned in groups of 5 or so to an olive tree on campus. The Grounds Department will be available to assist the groups with ladders, and will provide buckets, tarps, and other harvesting supplies. Harvesters will collect olives by hand and/or will use rakes to drop olives onto tarps spread beneath the trees and will place the olives into 5-gallon buckets. After harvesting the olives, the groups will bring their olives to the registration area to be weighed.
11:00 AM-1:00 PM – Lunch
Caltech Dining Services will be serving a special Mediterranean-themed lunch. The cost of the lunch will be $10 for anyone not on the student Board Program.
11:00 AM-2:00 PM – Culinary Demonstrations and Tastings
Culinary demonstrations will be held in the Ricketts-Fleming Courtyard. Tom Mannion and members of his cooking class and volunteers will lead the demonstrations. They will demonstrate olive brining, tasting of infused oils with breads, and escargot.
3:00 PM – End of Harvesting and Closing Remarks by President Jean-Lou Chameau
Final weigh-ins will take place in the Ricketts-Fleming Courtyard. Winners of the undergraduate House competition and graduate team competition will be announced.
