ALERT — 2003 – 2007 Honda Accord Recall: Power Steering Failure

October 1, 2012 A power steering hose problem is causing Honda to expand a recall from earlier this year. Back in May the automaker announced a recall of over 52,000 Acura TL vehicles. Today they have expanded that recall to include 573,000 Accords with V6 engines from the 2003-2007 model years.

Why is the Accord Being Recalled?

According to Honda, the temperature of the power steering fluid can cause the power steering hose to rupture and leak. While a leak may sound like a minor inconvenience, this actually has two potential catastrophic results:

  1. A complete loss of power steering, making it hard to control your vehicle.
  2. An engine fire if the fluid leaks onto the catalytic converter and ignites, turning your car into a bonfire.

Needless to say, this is a big mess. Honda says that there are no crashes or injuries as a result of this problem, but one engine fire has already been reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Replacement Part Delays

Unfortunately for owners of the recalled vehicles, the updated power steering hose won’t be available until early 2013. Honda plans on sending out notices in the mail alerting owners of the problem, but that doesn’t do much good. Maybe they should send free fire extinguishers along with a note saying “Hey, our bad maybe bring this with you on your next road trip just in case.”

If you believe your Accord is having symptoms or showing warning signs, we highly recommend taking your vehicle to a Honda dealer for inspection and, if necessary, a temporary repair. When the updated power steering hoses are available in early 2013, you should receive a second mailed notification with instructions on how to schedule an appointment for the final repair.

Owners will be able to determine if their vehicles are included in the recall by going to www.recalls.honda.com or by calling 800-999-1009, and selecting option 4.
