Son Volt is an alternative country group formed by Jay Farrar in 1994 after the breakup of the band Uncle Tupelo (Jeff Tweedy of Wilco fame was also part of Uncle Tupelo). Son Volt’s music ranges from quiet folk/country ballads reminiscent of Bob Dylan’s John Wesley Harding, to barhouse rockers in the spirit of Neil Young with Crazy Horse. Often considered a staple band of the alternative country movement, their music is perhaps better described as genre-spanning traditional American music.

Also sharing the bill are Cowboy Junkies, most famous for their second album “The Trinity Sessions” recorded in 1987 at Toronto’s Church of the Holy Trinity and released in 1988. This album included a cover of The Velvet Underground’s “Sweet Jane”.

Notably included are HOB Sunset Strip and the Wiltern, including shows for Son Volt, Elbow, Gomez and Los Amigos Invisibles. But be sure to check the list because those are just the shows that jumped out to me — may be more indie goodness buried in there.
