Pasadena – City threatens to pull the plug on Neighborhood Connections Office

Dear neighbors,

The Garfield Heights Neighborhood Association Board of Directors has just learned that the City has decided to cut funding for the Pasadena Neighborhood Connections office and all of their activities effective Dec. 4, 2016. Brian Biery, the acting director of Neighborhood Connections, was informed of this startling and disappointing news just a few days ago.

Here is the current situation as far as we know: apparently every department in the City of Pasadena has been asked by City Manager Steve Mermell to cut 5% from their budget ASAP. Yes, this is indeed an unfortunate outcome of the recent embezzlement scandal. The Neighborhood Connections office is part of the Human Services and Recreation Department overseen by Horace Wormely. We don’t know if cutting NC is a fait accompli, but if there is an outpouring of support from across the City by individuals and neighborhood associations that have been positively impacted by the NC office over the nearly 30 years of its existence, perhaps we can save it from the chopping block.

The Garfield Heights Neighborhood Association has interacted with and relied upon Neighborhood Connections since its inception in 1998 as a Landmark District. We would be sad and devastated by the loss of this vital office and we are planning to draft a letter immediately to the above parties. If you feel strongly about the office as we do, the GHNA urges you to rally to its assistance, to phone and write the powers that be. Time is of the utmost essence.

To list a few of things that Neighborhood Connections does/has done in the past:

—In 1998, worked closely with neighbors to assist in the creation of the GHNA, including guidance on the bylaws, meetings etc.
—Serves as a neutral liaison and resource for City services and personnel, as well as providing a connection and neutral facilitator to all other Pasadena NAs
—Created and maintains a map of NAs and provides a NA Directory.
—Operates the Safe Streets Now program for residents who live near problem properties to take legal action against negligent property owners, and can coordinate with appropriate City departments, including the Police and Code Enforcement.
—Runs the Pasadena Neighborhood Leadership Institute which helps and encourages people to become leaders in their communities.
—Maintains a current list of speakers on different topics that are available to come and speak at meetings.
—Provides free copying services for NA flyers and can provide Spanish translation of flyers

Did you know that Pasadena’s very own Neighborhood Connections has won national awards for it’s stellar neighborhood services and has served as a model for cities across the country?

As you can see, NC is a vital lifeline for the City’s neighborhoods, whether trying to form a new NA or searching for resources and advice, copying services, Safe Streets Now action, or the means to becoming a community leader. Perhaps you have personally worked with the office on a Safe Streets Now action or maybe you’ve been through the Leadership Institute or gained assistance forming a neighborhood association? If you have personal connections to anyone at the City including Steve Mermell, the Mayor, Horace Wormely, please reach out to them to voice your support for Neighborhood Connections and Brian Biery ASAP!

George Korzen, from WD Edson NA, sent this letter to his fellow Pasadena Neighborhood Leadership Institute (PNLI) students (a program run by Neighborhood Connections by the way) and asked me to share it with you:

Identity Theft and Credit Card Fraud on The Rise

It appears that criminals are increasing activity to defraud card holders of various companies. The best you can do is keep an eye on your statements and report immediately when  there is any suspicious activity.  This morning I received a statement from Kohl’s and there was several charges at a location that I have never visited. I contacted Kohl’s and after being put on hold and requesting to close my account it took over 45min to have a rep explain that I would receive a letter that I needed to respond to. I basically wanted to close my account and the rep basically was trying to get me to keep the account open. I was not interested in keeping the account open, Kohl’s closed the location in Pasadena nearest us. So there’s no reason for us to shop at Kohl’s.

Verizon Billing Practices Need Investigation

Verizon is one of the largest telecommunication companies in the world.  As such like AT&T and others feel that can abuse their power over consumers by bait and switch tactics and small print in contracts.

Hoping like happens in may cases the customer doesn’t notice the increase in their bills, sometimes the bills go up a few dollars a month, sometimes substantially more.  I just had it out with Verizon, my bill has been about $120 per month for many months, and I was getting a bonus data per month, now my bill goes up $40 and the rep has no explanation. Apparently my plan was changed, to what and without my notice.

Keep in mind that if you switch to a new plan your bonus data is lost.  But apparently like these companies do they copy each other, so now you can roll over your data from month to month.

Apparently reps can only offer bonus data on 8GB plans, there is no 6GB plan.

If you are with Verizon, take a close look at your bill for any changes, in particular if your bill goes up.

There’s also an investigation into Verizon billing practices related to data use billing.

Pasadena Doo Dah Parade 2016 – November 20

The Occasional Pasadena Doo Dah Parade will celebrate 39 years of irreverent frolicking on the streets of Pasadena. Join us by getting your FREE general audience tickets here or SIGN UP to be a marcher in the parade!

The 2016 Parade takes place on Sunday, November 20th, stepping off at 11am in East Pasadena along Colorado Boulevard.

When: Sun, November 20, 2016 11:00 AM – 1:30 PM PST

Where: 2627 E Colorado Blvd., Pasadena, CA 91107  View Map

On Doo Dah day, dozens of inventive, if zany, art cars and floats will accompany a legion of revelers past the mom-n-pop shops along East Pasadena’s shady tree-lined streets with a memorable cast of local eccentrics, disruptors, pundits, mutant art cars, lone wolves, steam punks, makers and merrymakers.

Entries will include the Nut Camp, Kinetic Pastry Science Mobile Muffins, Code Blue DeFibs, The New Partridge Family, Flying Baby Naptime Aerials, Nordic Men and Viking Ship, Toaster Car, Fashion on the Fly, Sign Spinners, Motorized Furniture, The Army of Toy Soldiers, beer boosting rockers Drunk in the Garage, Tortilla Target, The Billionaires, Free Thought Society, Unich Band, Car-Pool DeVille, Bearded Ladies, Yiddish Dracula, Partying Parrotheads, Murrugun the Mystic, Man as Giraffe, Recumbent Revolution, Zucchini Patrol, Doo Dah’s 2016 Royals, and legendary Doo Dah house band Snotty Scotty & the Hankies, among many others. Secret Santa, Doo Dah’s take on the North Pole icon, will close the parade and ring in the holiday season. And… not a rose will be harmed in the making of this parade!

Yes, another Doo Dah is here to help you forget your humdrum existence!

Known as the twisted sister of the conventional Rose Parade, the Occasional Pasadena Doo Dah Parade began as a grassroots event in 1978 to gain national attention for its eccentric and, often, irreverent satire. The parade which has spawned numerous off-beat replicants across the country was even highlighted in last year’s Wall Street Journal. It was also named by Readers Digest as “America’s Best Parade,” and was recently featured in the book 50 Places You Must Visit Before You Die. To recount the fascinating and confusing history of Pasadena Doo Dah Parade since 1978, please visit our website’s ARCHIVES page. Anyone wishing to participate visit our website or call!

Home Depot Coming to Pasadena?

The Home Depot Logo Pasadena?

Word is that Home Depot is in the early stages of evaluating the Avon property located on Foothill in Pasadena as a location for a store.

The new store would be a new concept Home Depot is testing.

This would be welcome news to many residents of Pasadena as the Avon location is being vacated by Avon. What it will mean to other hardware home stores like OSH(which is owned by Lowe’s) is unknown, but the area could use a large home retailer.

If Home Depot moves forward which it appears that it is in escrow on the property we could see a Home Depot in Pasadena in 2017.

Currently Alhambra and Monrovia are the nearest Home Depot stores.

This email from Pasadena Councilmember Gene Masuda of the East Pasadena District 4.

Most of you know that the Avon property at 2940 E. Foothill Boulevard was for sale for several years and Pasadena worked out a sale tax reimbursement agreement to keep Avon in Pasadena for three years, which that time has now expired.
This morning I found out that the Avon site is in escrow with Home Depot, and the early concept for use for the site is Home Depot 1/3 and High Tech 2/3.  The total property size is about 15 acres.  This is only preliminary information because Home Depot is still in their due diligence period of the escrow.

Why Does the US Social Security Administration Website Shutdown Overnight?

Wondering as many I am sure do, why does the US Social Security website at https://secure.ssa.gov/ or socialsecurity.gov shutdown basically overnight? Is it because of legacy systems running batch processing overnight? Is a security issue? Is it staffing? Is it overnight maintenance? Why would a critical US Government website used by millions of people daily be shutdown at a time when many in the US are trying to get access?  Remembering that the web never sleeps. Why would a website need to shutdown daily and be offline preventing access to important personal and financial details related to benefits.

Unincorporated Areas of Altadena and La Crescenta to Receive Animal Services from Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA

ACO Happy Dog

The Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA is excited to announce that as of December 1 it will provide animal control and sheltering services to the unincorporated areas of Altadena and La Crescenta-Montrose. We look forward to providing dedicated care and resources to the incoming animals and believe this new partnership will help us save more lives in the Greater Los Angeles Area.

The County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control (DACC) will be contracting with Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA (PHS) to provide animal control and sheltering services to the unincorporated areas of Altadena and La Crescenta-Montrose. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors authorized DACC Director Marcia Mayeda to enter into an agreement with PHS for animal care and control services in the unincorporated areas of Altadena and La Crescenta-Montrose to receive animal services from PHS.

The agreement goes into effect on Dec. 1, 2016, and will allow for PHS to respond to animal service inquiries within the unincorporated areas of Altadena and La Crescenta-Montrose that DACC had previously provided.

“This public-private partnership will improve animal control services to these unincorporated communities as PHS works extensively in those areas,” said DACC Director Marcia Mayeda. “Their animal shelter is better located to serve residents and animals, which will make it easier to reunite lost pets with their owners, a goal we all share.”

“PHS is pleased to extend ourselves to our neighboring communities and will ensure proactive services for animals and people,” said PHS President/CEO Julie Bank.

PHS is located on 361 S. Raymond Avenue in the City of Pasadena. They can be reached at 626.792.7151. For more information on PHS, please visit pasadenahumane.org
